Decatur ISD landed a big fish in its search for a new athletic director/head football coach by naming College Station head coach Steve Huff to the post on Thursday afternoon.

Huff has built a dynasty from the ground up at College Station High where he has posted an impressive 88-19 overall record in eight seasons, including a Class 5A-Division II state championship in 2017. In 2021, Huff led the Cougars to the 5A-Division I state title game, falling in overtime to Katy Paetow. Huff led CSHS to the playoffs in all eight seasons of varsity football and has built College Station into one of the elite programs in Texas.

He takes over a Decatur program that’s been in a state of flux after the departure of Mike Fuller and a dispute with the Decatur ISD school board in June; assistant coach Ty Lang served as the interim head coach for the 2021 season and led the Eagles to a 4-7 record.

Huff has ties to current Decatur ISD superintendent Dr. Chad Jones as the two worked together back in Oklahoma. His job now is to try and get a Decatur program that’s been through a lot in the past nine months back on track and back on the same page. He’s got a winning track record at College Station and prior to that at Midwest City High in Oklahoma and that track record will be vital for the community to be in lock-step with his program.
