Riding the momentum of last week’s fourth-quarter win over Ole Miss, Texas A&M will now host a deceivingly good UAB squad that can greatly help their chances of landing a New Year’s Six bowl with a win.
When the Aggies initially scheduled the game, it looked like it would be a walk in the park. However, the surging Blazers are (9-1) and ranked No. 25 in this week’s Coaches’ Poll.
Here are three things to keep an eye on as the Aggies look to take down the Blazers.

Texas A&M-UAB Preview
Aggies offensive line needs to contain Blazer Front to give Mond time
The UAB front is certainly not your typical Group of Five front as the unit has some big-time players including defensive end Jamel Garcia-Williams. The Blazers lead the country in sacks, accumulating 38 this season and notched seven in last week’s win alone.
The A&M offensive line will get a boost with the return of left guard Jared Hocker, who started eight games before suffering a leg injury against Mississippi State on Oct. 27. UAB’s secondary ranks fourth in the country in passing defense allowing an average of just 154.4 yards per game.
A&M secondary can take advantage of inexperienced QB Tyler Johnston III
The A&M secondary has been the weakness of the defensive unit this season but they will have a really good chance to right the ship against an inexperienced quarterback in Tyler Johnston III. Johnston, a freshman, has taken over for senior quarterback A.J. Erdley who suffered a shoulder injury two weeks ago and has only played two collegiate games.
Johnston is coming off of a three-interception performance last week against Southern Miss. The Aggies’ who rank 124th in the country in interceptions, have grabbed just three this season and have an excellent chance to do so with an inexperienced quarterback in a hostile environment. A&M will have to make do without cornerback Myles Jones for the first half, as he was ejected for targeting in the final minute of last week’s game. Expect Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mike Elko to dial up some blitzes and put Johnston under pressure early and often.
Get Trayveon Williams going early
Coming off of a monstrous game against Ole Miss in which he ran for 228 yards, Trayveon Williams will be facing another big test against the Blazers’ stout front. The UAB run defense ranks No. 15 in the country in run defense and has the talent of an SEC defense.
It’s no secret that Jimbo Fisher is going to try to get the ball in the hands of Williams as much as possible. That desire was shown last week as Williams had a career-high 31 carries. Williams will have his number called on a lot on Saturday and will need to have another stellar performance in order to open up the passing game for quarterback Kellen Mond.
