Hutto has been through another reset.
The Hippos have had three head coaches in three seasons. Another change came this offseason when Casey Walraven arrived from Alvarado.
Through the turnover, one thing has remained constant.
Jaiden Fields.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder has become the centerpiece of the Hippos on offense, defense and special teams. His ability to impact the game in multiple phases helped him earn 25-6A Overall MVP honors and turned him into one of the most versatile recruits in Texas.
Major colleges have come calling with offers on both sides of the ball, but his ceiling may be highest on the defensive side of the ball at safety.
Fields had a strong showing playing DB at the Rivals Camp.
“I’m just going out there and playing my game,” Fields said. “I have knowledge of where the receiver is going to be before he runs the route, and just going out there trusting my training and doing my job.”
Fields is embracing a leadership role heading into his senior season.
“Just going out there and doing what I do and they’ll follow my lead,” Fields said. “The guys have got to trust me to go out there and do my job, and then they’ll do their job. I am the leader on the team, so it’s big. I go out there and just do my job.”
College programs have taken notice. Fields literally holds offers from coast-to-coast. As the recruiting process moves forward, several schools are separating from the pack.
“Texas A&M, SMU, TCU, Arizona State, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Baylor,” Fields said. Official visits have been locked in with "SMU, TCU and Texas A&M."
There is a heavy in-state presence on his list, and there is a good chance he could play his college ball in Texas, but at the end of the day, it's about finding the right fit.
“I’ve got to check out the coaches and the environment,” Fields said. “You’ve got to be able to live there Monday through Friday, then Saturday is the game. It’s got to be right for me and right for my family.”
SMU is a program to watch closely, with Defensive Coordinator Scott Symons running point.
“The coaching staff and how they’ve done the past two years in the ACC,” Fields said regarding his interest in the Mustangs. “Coming in there and making the playoffs their first year and then having another great year last year. I think they’re going to continue building on that.”
