Class 3A Division II State Championship
AT&T Stadium, Arlington
Despite only rushing for six total yards of offense and being outgained 386-200, the Wall Hawks held off a late Newton rally to win their first state title in school history in front of a crowd of 9,721 at AT&T Stadium.
The Hawks opened the game with maybe their best offensive series. On the game’s first play, WR Reid Robertson threw a 43-yard pass on a trick play to Kellan Oliver to put the Hawks in the red zone. Three plays later, Jacob Braden scored from two yards out to give them a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.
Newton answered quickly with a nine-play, 68-yard drive behind the running of RB Kendray Porter, Jr., who tallied 54 yards on the opening march. Deldrick Samuel capped the drive with a one-yard run to cut the Wall lead to 7-6. Porter ran in the two-point PAT to give Newton an 8-7 lead with 7 minutes left in the first quarter.
A few drives later, Wall’s Gavin Sissom, who earned defensive MVP honors, blocked a Newton punt. Dylan Sellers picked the ball up and race 28 yards for the score to put Wall up 13-8 late in the first quarter and give the Hawks a shot in the arm that would eventually carry them to a state title.
Newton’s next drive took the game into the second quarter, but the Eagles drive stalled near midfield. On a 3rd-and-12 near midfield four plays, QB Landon York connected with Reid Robertson for a 50-yard touchdown pass; the two-point conversion failed and Wall led 19-8 with 9:33 remaining in the second quarter.
Wall’s defense set the stage for the game’s next big play when Oliver picked off Newton freshman QB Izayah Foster. He returned it for a score but the touchdown was called back for an illegal block, setting Wall up in Newton territory.
It would take the Hawks 10 plays to march 41 yards, but on fourth-and-goal from the five-yard line, York and Robertson hooked up for a five-yard touchdown pass to give Wall what looked to be an insurmountable 25-8 lead with 4:17 left in the first half.
Newton would finally put together a clean drive as the Eagles marched 98 yards in 16 plays with the drive capped off by a two-yard touchdown run from Cavaland Hunter, who also scored on the two-point try to cut their deficit to 25-16 with 3:25 left in the third quarter. Despite scoring, the drive was a win for Wall who didn’t allow a big play and forced Newton to take over five minutes off the clock.
Wall would punt on the next drive, but Newton wouldn’t take advantage of the momentum as the Eagles would fumble on the next series giving the ball back to the Hawks to start the fourth quarter.
Wall would move into the Newton red zone with the good field position, but the Hawks missed a field goal and Newton would get the ball back with just over ten minutes left in the game. The Eagles would go on another long drive getting to the Wall 24-yard line, but on the eleventh play of the drive facing a 4th and 1, Wall’s defense came up with a huge play as LB Sellers would stuff Hunter for no-gain to give Wall the ball back leading by two scores with just over six minutes left.
Wall moved to the Newton 32-yard line, looking for the knockout punch, but Newton’s defense made their own big play as DB Braylen Patterson made a sensational play on Landon York pass and picked it off, returning it to the Wall 41-yard line to keep Newton alive with 3:26 left in the game.
Newton foujnd the end zone just after the two-minute timeout as Samuel connected with Porter for a 37-yard touchdown pass; Porter ran in the two-point conversion to cut Wall's lead to 25-24 with 1:43 left in the game.
Newton attempted an onside kick but Wall recovered, took three knees and took a state title back to the Concho Valley for the first time in school history with a 25-24 win to finish the season at 16-0.
