Barbers Hill 34, Pflugerville Weiss 31 OT

One of just two Saturday night games on Thanksgiving weekend in the state got off to a late start after a two-hour rain delay, but the showdown didn’t disappoint as Barbers Hill rallied to take down upstart Pflugerville Weiss in an overtime thriller.

Weiss opened the game with a bang on special teams when Noah McPeek burst through the line to block the BHHS punt. Kaiden Haynes-Collins nabbed the ball mid-air and returned it seven yards to put WHS up 7-0 just two minutes into the game.

Barbers Hill moved into Weiss territory on its second drive of the night, but the Eagles turned the ball over on downs at the Weiss 25 after the Wolves stuffed a 4th-and-1. Weiss extendd it to a 14-0 lead as sophomore QB Jaxon Schad connected with WR Tre Moore for a 12-yard touchdown with 4:25 left in the first.

Pflugerville Weiss again stoned Barbers Hill on a 4th down on the next drive at the Wolves 22. It looked like Weiss may have a chance to run away with it, but the Barbers Hill defense made their own game-changing play as LB Colby Morgan stepped in front of a Schad pass and returned it 29 yards for the score to cut the lead to 14-7 with just over a minute left in the first quarter.

Barbers Hill's special teams came up with a monster play early in the second quarter when the Eagles blocked a Weiss punt to give themselves great field position. BHHS capitalized on the next drive when QB Brady Barrier connected with TE Raiden Cook for a 13-yard touchdown to tie the game at 14-14 with nine minutes left in the second quarter.

Barbers Hill got an interception from DB Daylon Smith on the next drive but this time the Weiss defense would stand firm and force a Barbers Hill punt. The Eagles faield on a fake punt and Weiss took over at the BHHS 45.

Weiss took the lead back with 4:35 left in the first half when Schad connected with his older brother, senior WR Dallas Schad, for a 16-yard touchdown connection to put the Wolves back up 21-14.

Barbers Hill had an answer, though, helped out by some key Pflugerville Weiss penalties when the Eagles tied the game at 21-21 with 1:12 left in the half.

Weiss got the lead back on the opening drive of the half on a 37-yard field goal from Cesar Balderas. The Wolves' special teams came up clutch once again when Jorian Guinn came screaming in off the edge to block the Eagles punt and then he scooped the loose ball up himself to run 20 yards for the score to put Weiss up 31-21 with just over five minutes left in the third quarter; it was Weiss’ eighth blocked punt of the season.

The momentum swing didn’t phase Barbers Hill, however, as the Eagles would methodically march back down the field and on the first play of the fourth quarter would cut the lead to 31-28 as Tripp Davis would score on an eight-yard run.

Weiss would be stuffed on fourth down on the next series, but Barbers Hill would be unable to capitalize on the next series as the Eagles missed a field goal to leave the score at 31-28 with just over nine minutes left. After an exchange of punts, Barbers Hill would get ball back with just over five minutes left in the game.

The Eagles would move all the way to the Weiss one-yard line with forty seconds left, but a false start penalty would push BHHS back the six-yard line and after being stopped on third down, the Eagles were forced to attempt a game tying field goal with time running out. Kicker Anthony Castillo would drain a pressure packed 22-yard field goal to tie the game and send the game to overtime at 31-31.

Barbers Hill on their overtime series would be unable to get anything going and long distance kicker Michael Schik would come on to nail a 45-yard field goal to give the Eagles their first lead of the game at 34-31. Weiss on their drive would be unable to get a first down and on fourth and three from the 18-yard line the field goal snap was mishandled and Barbers Hill would tackle the Weiss holder trying to run for the first down to secure the win and a Barbers Hill trip to the regional finals for the first time since 1976 with a 34-31 win.
