Coming out of the idle week after a massive win over Notre Dame on the road, Texas A&M looks to keep the momentum rolling against the Auburn Tigers at home in College Station. The Aggies hold a 3-0 record to this point in the season, defeating both UTSA and Utah State in addition to the Irish.
The gauntlet that is the SEC slate looms large as Mike Elko’s squad welcomes Auburn to Kyle Field.
Auburn represents another massive test for the Aggies, with the Tigers coming in just outside of the top 25 of the most recent AP poll. Jackson Arnold and company notched a big win over Baylor at McLane Stadium to start the season, but they are coming off a loss to Oklahoma last week.
While that loss to the Sooners dampened some of the potential hype for this matchup, make no mistake, this will be a big challenge for Texas A&M. Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton Jr. represent the most physically gifted wide receiver duo the Aggies have faced this season by far. The first question for the A&M defense is whether or not Will Lee and Dezz Ricks can rise to the challenge and limit the damage done by Coleman and Singleton.
Auburn is far from one-dimensional on offense, however.
While Jackson Arnold has a tendency to hold on to the ball a bit too long (something that led directly to him taking 10 sacks against OU), he also has the ability to hurt opposing defenses with his legs. Arnold shredded the Baylor defense earlier this year for 137 yards and two touchdowns.
He’s not the only weapon in the rushing attack, either. Running back Jeremiah Cobb has 375 yards on the season, averaging 7.2 yards per carry.
The Aggies may be forced to pick their poison defensively. I expect Auburn to rattle off some big plays, but if Texas A&M can pressure Arnold like Oklahoma did, they can prevent catastrophic collapses.
The Auburn defense presents challenges of its own. While Mario Craver and KC Concepcion have been a revelation for the Aggie offense, the Tigers are probably the best secondary A&M has faced this year.
Coming into this season, the expectation was that Texas A&M would rely on its rushing attack to open up big plays in the passing game. In reality, the Aggies have been one of the most explosive offenses in the country through the first three games of the season, courtesy of those aforementioned receivers.
You have to wonder if the Auburn defense will take a bit of a different approach, given the passing success. If so, could the Aggies take a more run-heavy approach than we’ve seen thus far?
Perhaps.
I think the sheer level of weaponry the Texas A&M offense possesses means we’ll see the Aggies score by whatever means necessary. Opportunities will still exist in the passing game. However, my sneaking suspicion is that Auburn shows Collin Klein’s offense a lighter box, leading to the first huge game for Le’Veon Moss in 2025.
I like Texas A&M to win this one 30-23 at home to mark a strong start to conference play for the Aggies.
