Weimar athletic director/head football coach Wade Griffin has been named to the same position at Mason High School, according to Mason ISD.

He replaces Michael McLeod who did not have his contract renewed and has since accepted a position as the defensive coordinator at Llano.

Griffin said Mason’s track record of success in all sports was really what attracted him to the job.

“Mason has a culture of high-achievers," he said. "They are good at everything and as an athletic director and head football coach in Texas, you want to be in that kind of community.

"Mason has a commitment to being successful. There’s incredible support in the community. In my career I have not seen many places as supportive as Mason, Texas.”

Griffin holds 15 seasons of head coaching experience, compiling a 103-70 career record with stops at Brookshire Royal, Elgin, White Settlement Brewer, Giddings and the last three seasons leading Weimar.

During his three seasons at Elgin, Griffin led the Wildcats in 2013 to their best season since 1958 when they posted a 12-1 record. He spent four seasons leading Brewer, a 5A program in the DFW area, where he led the Bears to three consecutive playoff appearances. Then in his first two seasons at Giddings he led the Buffaloes to back-to-back trips to the regional semifinals in 2018 and 2019. Griffin led Weimar in 2023 to a 10-3 mark and a regional semifinal appearance.

The new Mason head coach has also spent time as a defensive coordinator at Tenaha, Navarro Junior College, Round Rock Westwood, Brookshire Royal and Georgetown, along with being a graduate assistant at the University of Central Oklahoma.

With just eight days left in the school year, Griffin knows time is of the essence.

“I plan on being in Mason as many days as possible to meet the kids, teachers and community members," he said. "I know the kids have been working hard in offseason, so I want to spend these days building relationships. The summer will be our off-season, we are going to maximize the time the UIL gives us for sport specific activities."

Griffin said his wife will be joining the Mason coaching staff on the girls side.
