Surprise star of the weekend: SMU's James Proche

Just when teams thought SMU had enough weapons on offense, sophomore receiver James Proche decided to reemerge.

After a stellar freshman campaign a year ago (Over 700 yards receiving), the DeSoto product took somewhat of a backseat this season with LSU transfer and current leading receiver Trey Quinn coming into the offense. It’s not hard to see why as Quinn and his NFL-bound counterpart on the outside, Courtland Sutton, have become one the best one-two punch for one of the best offenses in the nation (7th in passing yards per game).

But recently, Proche has made sure that his name isn't forgotten and reminded everyone of his big-time upside. His reemergence over the last few games is providing sophomore quarterback Ben Hicks an embarrassment of options and someone else to hit the home run play when Sutton isn’t available.

Proche’s 86-yard opening touchdown against No. 18 UCF Saturday night, in which he broke seven tackles to put SMU up 7-0, was a shoo-in for SportsCenter’s Top 10 and was only the beginning of his 173 yards receiving on seven catches, a new career-high. It also marked the only time all season that the unbeaten Knights had trailed by a touchdown or more.

Hicks was going to have to find different options going against UCF’s secondary allowing just 54.12 percent completion on average this season. Plus, Sutton wasn't going to have an easy night against UCF’s Mike Hughes. He found his alternative in Proche who twice found breaks in the coverage for big gains and the sophomore made up over half of Hicks’ 283 yards passing. This game was coming off the heels of Proche’s 123-yard game last week against Tulsa.

If someone with James Proche’s talent happens to be your fourth or sometimes fifth option on offense, you might be in a good place. Opposing defenses, however, aren’t.

Want to double Sutton? Have fun with that with now two other SMU receivers capable of busting out 100-yard games on any given night. And although SMU fell short of ending UCF’s bid for a New Year’s Bowl, 31-24, the team might get another shot in the American Athletic Conference title game if things break their way. If that happens, you can guarantee Scott Frost is circling Proche's name on the scouting report.
