Dickey Morton was named to the Texas Football Super Team in 1969 after totaling 2,253 yards of offense, including 1,324 rushing yards, and scoring 19 touchdowns as a junior at Kimball. As a senior, he led the Knights to a 9–1 record, earned second-team all-state honors, and ranked among the state’s top recruits.
Morton went on to star in the SWC at Arkansas, where he was an All-American, All-Southwest Conference (1972–73), and captain. He was named National Player of the Week vs. Baylor, where he rushed for a school-record 271 yards and two touchdowns, and was also Regional Player of the Week five times. He played in the 1971 Liberty Bowl and the Hula Bowl, and was named Most Valuable Player (1972–73). He set the SWC career rushing record with 3,317 yards and 16 touchdowns in three seasons, and holds Arkansas game, season, and career rushing records.
He is on the SWC Team of the ’70s as a running back alongside Earl Campbell, and played in the 1974 All-American Game in Lubbock, Texas.
Drafted by the NFL Pittsburgh Steelers in 1974, he stayed one year of a two-year contract due to a shoulder injury, then went on to play for the CFL Toronto Argonauts in 1975.
