DAVID SMOAK–MEDIA
David Smoak began covering Texas high school football as a television reporter in 1981 in Lufkin, Texas, before joining KLTV in Tyler. In 1990, he began hosting a sports talk show at KTBB Radio. "Smoaky" is a graduate of Tyler Junior College and Stephen F. Austin State University, where he earned his Radio/TV degree.
Smoak won multiple awards from the Texas Association of Professional Broadcasters for "Best Radio Play-By-Play" and "Best Radio Sports Talk Show" in Texas. He was also honored for "Best Television Sportscast in Texas" and "Best Sports Feature and Best Serious Story" for "Jamie's Season" -- a story about Marshall High's Ball Boy Jamie Sexson, who battled Leukemia before passing away during the Mavericks' deep playoff run in 1988.
Over the last three decades, Smoak has recognized over 700 high school senior student-athletes for their academic excellence and charitable and community contributions while raising nearly $1 million. With help from Daffydd Morgan, he launched Smoaky.com in 2002, a high school football website with over 60,000 members.
Tyler Junior College awarded him the "Spirit Award" during their annual Circle of Honor ceremony in 1997, and in 2014, he was inducted into the East Texas Coaches Association Hall of Honor as a special contributor. Smoak is a Heisman Trophy and Biletnikoff Award voter, a member of the Football Writers Association of America and Pro Football Writers Association, and a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame ballot committee.
Today, Smoak hosts 365 Sports, a college football-centric podcast on the Rogue Media Network, alongside his son Craig Smoak and longtime co-host Paul Catalina. His daughter Jennifer lives in Dallas and is married to Daniel Golden.
Growing up as a military brat, Smoak spent part of his youth in Guam and Japan, attending three high schools, including Chofu and Yokota in Japan, before ultimately graduating from Universal City Randolph in San Antonio.
