In an absolute bombshell announcement first reported by East Texas GameDay, Texarkana Pleasant Grove head coach Josh Gibson announced he would not be returning after a dozen wildly successful seasons.

The news is a shocking development out of East Texas as up until early afternoon Tuesday no sources had indicated this move was pending or even being discussed.

Gibson posted an impressive 124-39 overall record and turned the Hawks from an also-ran into a state power in Class 4A-Division II.

He led Pleasant Grove to two state titles in 2017 and 2019 and also led the Hawks to the state title game in 2018.

After starting off with back-to-back 6-5 seasons, Pleasant Grove began to emerge as a power midway through 2016 season. The Hawks reeled off six straight wins after starting 0-6 and advanced all the way to the regional semifinals. From that point, they had 10 straight seasons of advancing to at least the third round.

During Gibson’s tenure at Pleasant Grove, PGISD made significant facility upgrades to put the Hawks on par with any 4A-Division II program in the state. With plenty of talent in the pipeline this opening instantly becomes one of the state’s most attractive job openings.
