Today’s Spotlight: The Vernon Lions

The Rundown

Vernon was one of the premier high school programs in the Wichita Falls area from 1983 through 1997, winning 11 district titles during that span. The Lions posted only three winning seasons during a rough stretch from 2009 until Kevin Sherrill arrived in 2021. Sherrill has steadily turned the program into a district contender during his four seasons by returning the program to its roots in the rushing attack. He is a perfect fit for the hard-working, blue-collar town.

Glory Days

The Lions were a dominant force between 1989 and 1992, marking the beginning of a run of nine consecutive district championships. The 1989 squad fell one point short of winning the Class 3A title against Mexia, which set the stage for the run to the school’s lone state football title in 1990.

The GOAT

Vernon has produced some outstanding running backs, including Bernard Scott, who later played in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals. Still, it’s the man who started the running back tradition who is considered the GOAT. Derrick Richardson was the Class 3A Player of the Year after gaining 2,459 yards and scoring 44 touchdowns on the ground while leading Vernon to the 1990 state title.

The Architect

Leo Brittain became a high school coaching legend during his 19 seasons in Vernon, utilizing the Wing-T to win 167 games, eight district titles, and four appearances in the state semifinals, with two state championship game appearances, including a state title win in 1990. The Lions immortalized Brittain when they renamed the Lion Stadium field after the legend in 2013. He was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association’s Hall of Honor in 2009, while also being named the 1990 Texas High School Sportswriters Association Coach of the Year. Additionally, he was selected as one of the top 100 coaches in Texas high school history by the UIL during their 100th anniversary celebration.

Battle Lines

Separated by only 47 miles, Vernon and Burkburnett have played on the gridiron every year since 1964 despite changes in each school’s size during that span. The Lions have owned the series, leading 46-21-3 against the Bulldogs. Vernon broke a five-game losing streak in the series with a 42-7 victory in 2023 and followed with another dominant 54-7 score last year.

Home Turf

Lion Stadium’s location remains one of the premier destinations for playoff football. Built in 1967, the 4,553-seat stadium has withstood the test of time, producing some of the most memorable Texas high school playoff games.

The Year That Was

Vernon returned to the regional round of the playoffs for the first time since 2014 last year after finishing third in district for the third consecutive season. The Lions were 7-0 when scoring 30 or more points, but were 2-4 when scoring under that mark, producing only 33 points total in their four losses.

Looking Ahead

The Lions are set to produce their best season under Kevin Sherrill’s guidance. Quarterback Ty Scott is the maestro of the Slot-T offense and has multiple dangerous weapons around him, including fellow seniors Tru Gipson and Jamari Chance. Senior center Keigan Ballard returns to lead the offensive line after being credited with 48 pancake blocks last season.

Sophomore Tyce Payne is a player to watch on the Lions this year after producing 95 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, three sacks, and forcing two fumbles at linebacker during his freshman season.

In Their Own Words

“What makes Vernon special is the people. Vernon High School has a rich tradition of athletic achievement, and it is a real source of pride for this community. Not only that, but there are a lot of people who have lived here their whole lives, and that gives this place a real sense of identity. People around here know what they care about and what they believe. It is a very tight-knit and caring community.” - Vernon head coach Kevin Sherrill.
