The Mean Green are headed back to Denton and DATCU Stadium this weekend, riding the momentum of an overtime thriller in Kalamazoo that kept them perfect on the season. North Texas now faces its toughest challenge yet: the Washington State Cougars of the Pac-12.
For UNT head coach Eric Morris, this matchup is more than just another game. Morris has ties to Pullman, having spent two separate stints with Washington State earlier in his career. Now, he’ll look to outmaneuver a familiar program as he tries to guide North Texas to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2018, when the Mean Green began the season 4-0.
But this won’t be a walk in the park. Washington State arrives in Denton on a two-game win streak under first-year head coach Jimmy Rogers. Rogers made the jump from South Dakota State, where he compiled a staggering 27-3 record over two seasons, capped by an FCS National Championship in 2023. He’s brought some of that Jackrabbit grit with him to Pullman, along with several key players who are already making their mark.
Sophomore quarterback Jaxon Potter has been steady at the helm, throwing for 465 yards and four touchdowns through two games. Still, it’s the Cougars’ defense that has been their calling card. Washington State has allowed just 23 points through its first two contests, thanks in large part to transfers from South Dakota State. Linebacker Caleb Francl, safety Matthew Durrance, and cornerback Colby Humphrey—all fifth-year seniors—lead the team in tackles and bring a wealth of experience to a defense that prides itself on discipline and physicality.
That unit will be tested by one of college football’s best stories in 2025: North Texas quarterback Drew Mestemaker. The redshirt freshman has burst onto the scene, throwing for 553 yards and five touchdowns without a single interception. He’s operating a high-powered Morris offense stocked with playmakers at the skill positions.
The wide receiver room is as deep as it’s been in years, with Wyatt Young, Cameron Dorner, Simeon Evans, and Miles Coleman all making significant contributions. Tight end Tre Williams showed his versatility last week, hauling in a touchdown reception while serving as a critical blocker. The potential return of starting right tackle Jimto Obidegwu, who missed last week due to injury, could give UNT’s offensive line a much-needed boost against Washington State’s aggressive front.
Off the field, the atmosphere in Denton is shaping up to be electric. Weather forecasts call for perfect football conditions, and the North Texas Athletic Department is pulling out all the stops to break attendance records. Athletic director Jared Mosley even promised to channel his inner Stone Cold Steve Austin—a UNT alum—by celebrating with the student section if they set a new student attendance record.
With two undefeated teams set to collide, this weekend’s matchup is more than just a non-conference showdown—it’s a chance for the Mean Green to make a statement on the national stage.
