The portal is technically closed and most of the top players who entered have found new homes for the 2026 season. We’re breaking down each of the 13 FBS portal classes across the state of Texas, continuing with Texas State. Head coach G.J. Kinne and his Bobcats plan to compete right away in the new-look Pac-12. The offense returns stars at quarterback and wide receiver. The defense is under new leadership in coordinator Will Windham, who arrived from South Alabama.
Overview
Kinne has proven himself to be an excellent talent evaluator in the portal and that should give Bobcat fans confidence in the nearly 20-man transfer portal class that was recently signed. The group includes eight Power Four transfers, including Boston College quarterback Shaker Reising, who should serve as the primary backup to returning starter Brad Jackson. The Bobcats added three P4 offensive linemen and a mix of proven commodities and untapped talent on the defensive side of the ball.
Class Grade: B
Three Key Additions
OL William Boone, North Carolina: Boone started the first three games of the season for North Carolina in 2025 before leaving the program to pursue a medical redshirt and preserve two years of eligibility. The 6-foot-6, 340-pound lineman can play tackle or guard, but our guess is that he starts at tackle for the Bobcats in 2025. The Georgia native was at Prairie View A&M in 2024. All three of Texas State’s offensive line portal adds come from the P4 level.
DL Kaleb James, Arkansas: A junior who is returning to Texas after three years in the SEC at Arkansas. James played in all 12 games for the Razorbacks, appearing mostly on special teams. The Mansfield product took a redshirt in 2023 and played in three games in 2024. He was a three-star prospect in high school as a defensive end and has grown into a player who can play the edge in a three-man front or as a three-technique in a four-man front.
DE Phillip Bradford, McNeese State: Kinne & Co. have enjoyed much success with former FCS standouts and Bradford could be the next for the Bobcats. He recorded 40 tackles last year, including 15.5 for loss and 5.5 sacks. Texas State needs pass rushers in 2026 and his 6-foot-6, 280-pound frame plus his former production leads us to believe that Bradford could emerge as a real breakout star in 2026.
Two Sleepers
DB Michael Patterson, SFA: Patterson began his career at Houston before spending two seasons in a talented SFA secondary. He played 21 games at cornerback for the Lumberjacks over the last two seasons, breaking up five passes in 2025 while recording 27 tackles, including three for loss. Patterson also forced two fumbles. He’ll immediately compete for a starting spot at cornerback in a Bobcats secondary that allowed 23 passing touchdowns in 2025.
DT Tae Woody, ULM: A former four-star prospect who began his career at Florida State and had a stop at UAB in 2023. Woody played nine games for ULM in 2025, registering 18 tackles, including 2.5 for loss and a quarterback hurry. Texas State saw him up close in the November matchup last season when Woody had three tackles. He’ll be tasked with aiding a Bobcats run defense that ranked 91st in the FBS in 2025 in rushing yards allowed per game.
