The Oklahoma State Cowboys have lost 13 straight Big 12 games and they haven’t been competitive in 2025. The Cowboys opened 2025 with a win over Tennessee Martin, before losing to Oregon by 63 and Tulsa. In the wake of the Tulsa loss, the Oklahoma State administration fired longtime head coach Mike Gundy and appointed long time Big 12 assistant Doug Meacham.

Meacham was Gundy’s TE coach from 2005-2012, before stints at Houston (not a Big 12 school at that point), TCU, Kansas, and TCU again before returning to Oklahoma State in 2025 as the offensive coordinator. As the interim, Meacham is 0-4 losing to Baylor, Arizona, Houston and Cincinnati. They gave their best shot against Baylor, looking like a team that was playing their last game ever. The Cowboys left it all on the field and lost 45-27.

They’ve given up at least 40 points in every Big 12 game and have scored 13, 17, and 17 in their last three conference games. In the midst of the losing on the field, they’ve also been losing off the field with at least a dozen players entering the transfer portal.

Even without a loss to Arizona State last week, Texas Tech would have had plenty of motivation to beat Oklahoma State. After the loss though? Texas Tech might just want to beat up on the Cowboys.

It’ll be Will Hammond again as the starting QB with Behren Morton still out, though improving. Terrance Carter will also be held out against Oklahoma State, with head coach Joey McGuire basically saying that they didn’t need the duo to win this week, all due respect to Oklahoma State.

After not using Cam Dickey and J’Koby Williams to their best of their abilities in Tempe, I expect them to carry the load this weekend in Lubbock. Still, I don’t expect it to be all ground and pound. Offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich told the media in his weekly press conference that he wanted Hammond to be more aggressive down the field. I expect plenty of that as well.

Defensively, just keep plugging away. Oklahoma State doesn’t have a Jordyn Tyson type at WR, very few teams do, but RB Rodney Fields Jr is coming off a breakout performance where he ran for 163 yards against Cincinnati. The Red Raiders have been very good against the run, but if Oklahoma State is going to have success I expect Fields to be at the heart of it.

Texas Tech is favored by nearly 40 points this week and I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t cover that. I’ll take Texas Tech to exercise whatever demons they accrued last week, winning 49-6. That’s a Red Raiders cover and a snug over of the 54.5 total.
