Port Neches-Groves (2-0) at La Porte (2-0):
It should be a near sellout at La Porte’s beautiful new stadium on Friday as state-ranked Port Neches-Groves visits state-ranked La Porte in a battle that should have implications in the 5A rankings in both divisions.
Port Neches-Groves dominated Beaumont United last week, 45-7. It was an avalanche of big plays from the defense and special teams that broke the game open early. PNG picked off four passes in the first half, returning two for touchdowns. They also blocked a punt that set up a touchdown.
La Porte took down a tough Humble Kingwood squad last week 34-28 as Ashton Ruffin’s 10-yard touchdown run with eight seconds left in the game proved to be the difference. He ended up with three touchdown runs on the night, while sophomore Sean Simon added two scores on the ground for the Bulldogs.
LaPorte was banged up going into this one a season ago. They enter this week’s showdown relatively healthy and that gives the veteran Bulldogs the edge at home.
