Cuero (1-0) at La Vernia (1-0)
It’s a big Region IV measuring stick game as traditional powerhouse Cuero takes on a new up and coming power in La Vernia.
Cuero slipped past arch-rival Yoakum, 28-21, last week in a game that’s almost always a tight battle. The Gobblers got a big game from ATH Jarvis Williams in his Cuero debut as he hauled in three passes for 122 yards and two scores and he returned a kickoff for a touchdowns as well.
The big concern for Cuero coming out of the win is ball security; the Gobblers turned the ball over three times and didn’t force any turnovers.
La Vernia took on Class 5A San Antonio Harlandale last week and left with a 21-0 win as the game was called at halftime due to some severe weather that moved through the San Antonio metro area last Friday. The Bears have some inexperience in the backfield, so it looks like they’ll go to the air more this year and it paid off in the win as QB Cooper Null threw for 147 yards and three scores in just that single half of action.
The La Vernia defense will get a much tougher test as Cuero can stress a defense to the limits with their skill talent.
I think if Cuero takes care of the football they take this one, but if they are minus-three in the turnover margin La Vernia wins it.
