Lake Travis has canceled varsity, sub-varsity, and freshman team football games against Dripping Springs that were slated for Week 1, per an email sent by Lake Travis head coach Hank Carter to Dave Campbell's Texas Sports. The decision comes in the wake of senior lineman Odin Hensley's death on August 12 after he suffered cardiac arrest during a fall camp workout.
"The past two weeks have been incredibly difficult for everyone involved," Carter wrote. "After careful consideration and with the physical and mental safety of our players and staff as our top priority, we have made the decision to cancel our football games against Dripping Springs next week."
Carter said that Lake Travis may participate in controlled scrimmages against Dripping Springs, but that the two programs would not have a final decision until the next couple of days.
Hensley was a 6-foot-3, 255-pound offensive lineman who was a three-year varsity starter and two-time state qualifying wrestler. He collapsed during the Cavaliers' first fall camp workout on August 10, was airlifted to Dell Children's Medical Center in Austin, and passed away two days later.
A GoFundMe for Hensley's family has been arranged, already raising more than $208,000 as of Wednesday afternoon. His Celebration of Life is set for Saturday, August 22 at 2:00 p.m. at Austin Ridge Bible Church.
