Comal ISD Thursday night made things official as they named San Antonio Harlan head coach Eddie Salas as the second-ever head football coach at San Antonio Pieper High School. Salas steps in for Nick Rogers, who started the Pieper program up back in 2021 and in four short years built the Warriors into a formidable foe in the Alamo City.
Salas comes in with an impressive track record of his own as a program builder as he started up the Harlan program back in 2017. The Hawks were immediately competitive posting an 8-4 mark in their varsity debut season in 2018 as a 5A program and that success has continued as in eight varsity seasons the Hawks have posted five seasons of at least ten or more wins.
In 2019, Harlan posted a 12-1 mark advancing to the 5A-Division I regional semifinals, Harlan posted another 12-1 mark as a 6A program in 2023 and in 2024 the Hawks had their best season in school history going 12-2 and advancing to the regional final in 6A-Division II where they fell to eventual state champion Austin Vandegrift.
Coach Salas also spent four seasons as the head coach at struggling San Antonio Holmes, after going winless in his first two seasons, Holmes showed remarkable improvement going 4-6 and 5-5 in his final two seasons leading the Huskies.
Salas, a native of San Antonio spent time as the defensive coordinator at Boerne Champion before getting his shot to be a head coach in 2013. He holds a career record as a head coach of 84-54 in a dozen seasons. He takes over a Pieper program that will be moving to Class 6A in 2026, the Warriors were 8-5 in 2025 at the 5A-Division I level. In 2024 they posted an 11-1 mark and in 2023 they were 12-2 and advanced to the 5A-Division II regional finals.
Salas’ departure opens up maybe the most attractive job in the San Antonio area to date as Harlan produces some of the top talent in San Antonio and they are fresh off a 10-2 season (11-1 on the field, they had to forfeit a Week 1 win).
