The 2025 Texas high school football season had its fair share of surprises. That's not unusual — part of what makes this sport great is the unpredictability, the beautiful chaos. And try as we might to be the foremost Texas high school football experts, we at Dave Campbell's Texas Football are very wrong fairly frequently.
Upsets happen every week in Texas high school football. But what were the biggest upsets of the 2025 Texas high school football season?
To figure this out, we'll remove the human element from the equation and turn to the DCTF computer, which projects the result of every game every week. Because it is an unfeeling robot that inputs data and spits out ones and zeroes, we can trust it to give a fair assessment of which teams are favorites — and which are underdogs — in each contest each week. For the season, in UIL 11-man games, the DCTF computer projected more than 82 percent of the winners correctly, and projected the margin within about 1.5 points on average. Pretty good! So when a team made the computer look silly, we can confidently say they did something special.
One caveat here: we are going to remove Week 1 results. Why? Because the DCTF computer has very minimal data to work off of — we're going exclusively off of preseason projections, and for a true upset, we need to have at least some real data on each team. If you are interested, the biggest Week 1 upsets were Mansfield Lake Ridge over Frisco Reedy (40-point underdogs), Livingston over Fort Bend Austin (42-point underdogs), Mount Vernon over New Diana (43-point underdogs) and Birdville over Crowley (50-point underdogs).
