Five Skill Players Whose Stocks Could Soar at State 7-on-7

This week, College Station will host the most TXHSFB athletes competing on one group of fields at any time of the year.

Most of the names fans and media members are familiar with will ball out, but so will some that might not be known. Take Jacksboro's Cannon Valenzuela from the 2024 tournament, a Colorado State commit who earned DCTX three-star status after a dominant display.

This year, DCTX is attempting to call its shot on the next Valenzuela. Here are five skill players who could experience the same meteoric rise in recruiting circles. The names are presented in alphabetical order.

HD Davis (Wolfe City RB, 2026)

Ok, Davis is definitely not a TXHSFB sleeper anymore. The Kansas State commit rushed for 2,789 yards and 33 touchdowns as a junior, which ranks second among all returning running backs in the state. But some college programs could be kicking themselves for letting Davis get out of Texas after this weekend.

Standing 6-foot and weighing 205 pounds with 10.7 100-meter dash speed, Davis has the athleticism to transition from the Class 2A ranks into major college football. Coach Brad Smithey describes him as the leader of the team and a town celebrity. Davis told DCTX this spring that his goal is to rush for 3,000 yards in 2025, and that journey starts in College Station.

DK Garza (Alamo Heights RB/WR, 2026)

Coach Ron Rittimann says if his team had 22 DK Garzas, Alamo Heights would win every game. Texas signee Michael Terry was the headliner on the recruiting trail for Alamo Heights last season. But the Mules had another offensive star in Garza, and this one hasn’t received as much shine because of his 5-10, 185 frame… yet.

Garza rushed for 1,365 yards and 25 touchdowns, earning unanimous First Team All-District 13-5A DII honors. Garza is one of the state’s most versatile athletes, with two receiving touchdowns and two kickoff return touchdowns as a junior. That versatility doesn’t stop on the football field. He’s a four-sport letterman (football, basketball, lacross and track). He currently holds one offer to Trinity, but Rittimann says he'd help any college program.

Tim Moore (Van Alstyne WR, 2027)

Coach Mikeal Miller describes Moore as the complete package at wide receiver. The 6-2, 175-pound athlete earned District 5-4A DII Offensive Newcomer of the Year as a freshman with 22 catches for 484 yards and eight touchdowns. His explosive athleticism on tape is backed up by his 22-10.5 long jump numbers. Moore will be the focal point of Van Alstyne’s offense in 2025.

Dylan Russell (Kenedy ATH, 2029)

Kenedy’s Mike Jackson has been a head coach for 32 years. He says Russell (6-0, 160), an incoming freshman, is the best athlete he’s coached. And he’s had three players go to the NFL.

“This is probably a story that I will tell a lot over the next four years,” Jackson said.

Of course, there’s no guarantee on how this 14-year-old’s career will turn out, but he has the drive. Russell’s Christmas present was a pro agility ladder, and he spends hours watching wide receiver film.

Russell’s eighth-grade 100-meter time would’ve qualified him for the Class 2A State Track Meet. He ran a verified 4.47 40-yard dash at the TCU camp this summer. But Russell is a football player who runs track. Jackson describes him as open even when he’s not open.

Kash Schwab (Bridgeland RB, 2027)

Schwab earned First Team All-District 16-6A as a sophomore with 1,668 yards on 9.37 yards per carry. Expect him to be a big factor in Bridgeland’s 7-on-7 attack; Schwab is a running back with WR-like hands (29 catches, 355 yards).

Schwab has solid size at 5-11, 180 pounds, and can break tackles with shiftiness or strength. Combine those physical traits with his football IQ and vision, and Schwab is a defensive nightmare. He currently has one offer to Texas State, but that should increase after the 2025 season.
