Edwin Simmons rushed for 5,435 yards and 69 touchdowns in three varsity seasons for the Hawkins Hawks from 1980 to 1982. In 1982, he amassed 2,935 yards and 38 touchdowns, including an extraordinary 437-yard performance against Troup.
One of the top running back prospects in the nation, Simmons signed with Texas and drew comparisons to Earl Campbell. He declined Coach Fred Akers’ suggestion to redshirt in 1983. Simmons went on to rush for 100 yards in Texas victories over Rice and Oklahoma.
Injuries limited his college career, and he finished with 936 career rushing yards and nine touchdowns while playing parts of four seasons with the Longhorns.
