He was also named first-team at running back on the Associated Press team after rushing for 1,059 yards and 12 touchdowns during the regular season. In Carroll’s 14-6 victory over Cuero in the 1993 Class 3A state championship game, Johnson forced a crucial third-quarter fumble.

In 1992, Johnson rushed for 1,172 yards, averaged 9.3 yards per carry, recorded 31 receptions for 595 yards, and scored 27 touchdowns. He was named the 1992 Northeast Tarrant County Star-Telegram Offensive Player of the Year. In that season’s state championship game, he rushed for 92 yards and added 78 receiving yards in the victory. As a junior, Johnson earned second-team all-state honors at defensive back.

He signed with Texas Tech during the Spike Dykes era. Johnson earned first-team All-Big 12 honors in 1997 after leading the Red Raiders with 113 tackles. That same year, he was named to the AFCA Good Works Team. He was also an All-Southwest Conference punt returner in 1994 and 1995.
