Children’s Health Stadium, Prosper
The game of the week in Week 9 across the state was moved to a rare 1 p.m. Friday afternoon start due to impending storms in the North Texas area, and despite the early start it was still a near-capacity crowd for a district showdown between a pair of unbeaten top 10 teams.
Prosper’s defense opened the game In impressive fashion forcing an Allen three-and-out on the game’s first drive. PHS then went on a 10-play, 74-yard drive that resulted in a Michael Bukauskas 30-yard field goal to stake Prosper to a 3-0 lead halfway through the first quarter.
Allen would then go on a vintage 18-play drive that ended with it taking the lead as Lyndon Spriggs barreled in from four yards out. Allen converted a fourth down in Prosper territory on the drive, which also saw QB Jeremiah Daoud find WR Caleb Smith for a 10-yard gain on 3rd-and-9 to keep the drive moving.
It didn't take Prosper long to answer as on the second play of the ensuing drive QB Braeden Imhoff connected with Lathon Latiolais for a 75-yard scoring strike to reclaim the lead at 10-7.
The back and forth would continue four plays into Allen's next drive when Daoud connected with WR Carter Harris for a 50-yard scoring strike to give Allen a 14-10 advantage.
Allen would appear to seize control of the game on the next drive as after forcing a Prosper punt, the Eagles went to work with a ten-play scoring march capped off with Daoud throwing a 13-yard touchdown pass to RB Spriggs on a swing pass and all of a sudden Allen held a 21-10 lead late in the second quarter. Prosper would hit a big play on the next drive in the passing game, but Allen DB LeBron Bauer stripped the Prosper WR of the ball while fighting for extra yardage giving Allen the ball back right before the two-minute timeout. Prosper’s defense would come up with a big stop before the half to force an Allen punt and keep the score at 21-10 going into the halftime break.
Prosper would open the second half with a 17-play, 90-yard drive that took over eight minutes off the clock as Bryce Robinson scored on a 10-yard run to cut the Allen lead to 21-17 with 8:13 left in the third quarter.
After an Allen three-and-out, Prosper would go into the bag of tricks for a controversial touchdown to take the lead as QB Braeden Imhoff threw what was intended to be a backwards pass to WR Marcus McCoy, who then threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to WR Latiolais to give PHS a 24-21 lead with 5:54 left in the third quarter. Replays after the touchdown showed that the pass from Imhoff to McCoy was a forward pass, but the officials missed it and Prosper was able to get the edge with the big play.
Allen would get the offense going on the next drive that spanned the end of the third quarter, but the drive came up empty as Allen missed a 40-yard field goal that preserved the Prosper lead at 24-21 early in the fourth. After a Prosper punt, Allen would tie the game at 24-24 on a Preston Hurless’ 37-yard field goal with 5:27 left.
Prosper had an answer, though, when it caught Allen in a blitz on 3rd-and-5 and Imhoff found WR Dallas Boozer for a 57-yard touchdown pass to put Prosper up 30-24 (the PAT was no good, which turned out to be a huge miss).
Allen would show championship mettle on the next drive going 75-yards in a dozen plays to take a 31-30 lead with 1:12 remaining as Jaden Hambric scored on a nine-yard run and Hurless’ PAT would give Allen the lead.
Prosper would get the ball back with two timeouts and they’d march to the Allen 30-yard line where they’d attempt a 47-yard field goal with seven seconds left in the game, but the field goal was wide left and Allen would take one knee and escape Prosper with a classic 31-30 win.
Allen would finish the regular season 10-0 and advance all the way to the state semifinals before falling to Duncanville, while Prosper would advance to the regional semifinals before falling to Southlake Carroll.
