The UIL State Executive Committee (SEC) ruled on Monday that they would uphold a previous 7-2A Division I Executive Committee (DEC) ruling that Rio Vista High School’s football team would be banned from the 2025 football playoffs.

The SEC upheld the ruling on the grounds that recruitment of student-athletes to Rio Vista ISD took place. The vote was 4-1 in favor of upholding the DEC ruling on playoff suspension.

The SEC did overturn the DEC ruling from early September that 7-2A Division I opponents would have the option of not playing scheduled games against Rio Vista High School. Those six district games will be played as scheduled. The 7-2A Division I DEC will need to meet to determine how football games involving Rio Vista will be handled from a district tiebreaker standpoint.

The SEC also ruled by a unanimous vote that a student-athlete currently enrolled at Rio Vista would be suspended for the first two district games due to being found involved in the recruitment of student athletes to Rio Vista High School.

Additionally, the SEC issued a two-game suspension to Rio Vista head coach Matthew Woodard for the games on October 3 vs. Italy and Oct 10 vs. Axtell.
