Bruni is canceling its 2025 UIL 11-man football season due to low numbers, Dave Campbell's Texas Football confirmed Thursday.
Head coach Paul Veirs told Texas Football that the Badgers will play an outlaw six-man schedule in 2025, and request to be placed in a Class 1A (six-man) district in the 2026 UIL realignment.
The Badgers — which play in District 16-2A Division II — were slated to be the smallest school in Texas still playing 11-man football, with an enrollment of just 81 students in the most recent UIL snapshot from October 2023. Despite their small size, Bruni had remained competitive, posting winning seasons in 2022 and 2023 and making back-to-back trips to the regional finals in 2015 and 2016. The team finished 2-8 in 2024.
According to multiple sources, Bruni notified the 16-2A Division II District Executive Committee back in May that they might not have enough players to field a team in 2025. Only 12 players have reported for fall workouts, and the school’s enrollment is expected to drop to just 66 students this school year.
