The Blitz: UTPB close to hiring head football coach

UTPB is expected to make a decision on its next head football coach soon. Braxton Harris is hiring a coaching staff filled with Texas high school football ties at Houston Christian.

The Blitz took a break last week during the UIL State High School championships, but the news didn’t stop. Since the last time this column was published, eight new coaches have been hired in the sub-FBS ranks. This edition will catch up on all the coaching hires with news and rumors on assistant coaches.

For the coaches that have filled an assistant position or have an opening for an assistant job that you would like mentioned in this column, please send an e-mail to cory.hogue@texasfootball.com or reach me through my DMs on Twitter @CoryHogueSports.

  • Clint Dolezel was hired at Texas A&M-Commerce and is the first alum hired to be the Lions head football coach since 1930. Dolezel has had extensive success at the indoor football level but is not short on 11-man experience. He spent multiple fall camps with the New Orleans Saints when his cousin, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell was on Sean Payton’s staff.

  • Sources close to the Commerce program have indicated that Dolezel will retain most of the defensive coaching staff, including defensive coordinator Kyle Williams.

  • UIW made a run to the FCS semifinals before a tough loss to North Dakota State. The Cardinals elevated wide receivers coach and UIW alum Clint Killough to head coach with G.J. Kinne’s departure to Texas State. Killough is in the challenging situation of hiring coaching staff while maintaining focus on early signing day.

  • Houston Christian hired a young coach known for his recruiting prowess in Braxton Harris, who turned around the Howard Payne program before moving to FCS Campbell. Harris helped the Camels secure the top-ranked FCS recruiting class last year and could thrive with the talent available around Houston.

  • Sources indicate Harris is seeking to add coaches with experience in Texas high school football, either as a coach or player. Former Howard Payne head coach Jason Bachtel is joining HCU’s staff as offensive coordinator, while former Towson defensive coordinator Eric Daniels is expected to assume the same position with the Huskies.

  • Other coaches rumored to join HCU are former Howard Payne offensive line coach Ross Horner to the same position with the Huskies. Former Howard Payne offensive coordinator Stoney Patton will coach the Huskies wide receivers, and Roger Hinshaw will remain on staff and coach safeties after serving as interim head coach following the departure of Vic Shealy.

  • Lamar went outside the box and hired Peter Rossomando to be the Cardinals head football coach. Rossomando spent last season as offensive line coach at FCS Charlotte and was previously a NCAA Division II Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award in 2017.

Western Athletic Conference

  • UTRGV tabbed New Braunfels Canyon head coach Travis Bush to become the first coach in the history of the Vaqueros program. When he served as the Roadrunners first offensive coordinator, Bush had a first-hand view of Larry Coker building the UTSA program. Bush has previously served as offensive coordinator at Houston, where he was the associate head coach during his final two years with the Cougars.

  • Sam Houston coach K.C. Keeler signed a contract extension that will keep him with the Bearkats as they transition to FBS. Keeler led SHSU to the 2020 national title and was a finalist for the Texas State job and was rumored to be a candidate for the North Texas opening.

  • Dave Campbell's Texas Football has confirmed that Bearkats wide receivers coach Jacoby Walker will not return next season. Former wide receivers coach Chris Buckner will return to Sam Houston after spending last season at Texas State. However, it is unclear what his position will be on the coaching staff for next year.

Lone Star Conference

  • West Texas A&M hired Josh Lynn to lead the Buffaloes football program. Lynn arrives in Canyon after a successful six-year run as head coach at Nebraska-Kearney. He was 35-25 overall and led the Lopers to an appearance in the second round of the Division II playoffs in 2021. During their previous search for a head coach, Lynn was a finalist for the WT job.

  • According to sources, UTPB was scheduled to finish on Tuesday, with a decision expected soon. Finalists are rumored to include Falcons defensive coordinator Chris Mineo, East Central Oklahoma head coach Kris McCullough and WT outside linebackers coach and pass game coordinator Will Wagner. Wagner helped lead Odessa Permian to the 1991 Class 5A Division II title and was the head coach at Angelo State from 2011-2018.

American Southwest Conference

  • Austin College announced Tony Joe White as the Kangaroos head football coach. White returns to Texas following a successful six-year run as head coach at Birmingham-Southern. He led the Panthers to a program record 10 wins and an at-large berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs in 2021. White was the quarterback at Texas A&M-Commerce from 1991-1993.

Southern Athletic Association

  • According to sources, Schreiner has not posted the job to find the school’s first head football coach. The Mountaineers are expected to post the job soon.
