Argyle Liberty Christian 2027 OLB Cooper Witten (6’2, 220) said he expects to be “ready to roll” within the next couple of weeks as he continues recovering from an ankle injury that cut his junior season short.
The Oklahoma commit did not compete at the Allen 7-on-7 State Qualifying Tournament, but still made his presence felt by stepping into a coaching role while helping guide his team to a 4-0 finish and a trip to the 7-on-7 State Tournament in College Station.
“It was fun being out here with a new team, being able to coach them up and see the game from a coach's perspective, which I think will help me a bunch going into this year,” Witten said.
“I think it was a good opportunity for them to get live reps competing and being in game-like situations where you have to make a plan and compete. I think they did an awesome job today and got the job done.”
The DCTX five-star and son of Oklahoma tight ends coach Jason Witten committed to the Sooners over offers from Texas A&M, Georgia, Tennessee and Ohio State.
“I think it was just Coach (Brent) Venables and the way I think he can develop me, and linebacker coach Coach (Nate) Dreiling,” Witten said. “I think they did an awesome job. His defense is unlike anything else. Very versatile.”
“They were my first offer, so that means a lot. And just how they've kept in contact for the past few years and the way I think they can develop me is unlike any school I've seen, so I decided to go there.”
His father’s presence on OU’s staff naturally strengthened the Sooners’ position, but Cooper said the program’s loyalty and defensive scheme ultimately drove the decision.
“Oh yeah, I think I would have gone there even if he wasn't there,” Witten said.
Competition inside the Witten household is already heating up, where Cooper joked that the trash talk about facing his dad’s tight ends in practice has already started.
“Oh yeah, all the time,” Witten said. “He sends me videos of his tight ends that he has and is like, ‘You ready to roll this upcoming spring?’ So yeah, we're constantly talking, chirping back and forth about it, but it'll be fun.”
