BREAKING: Elite LB Commits to Texas, Will Fill Crucial Role on 'D'

The Texas Longhorns have found their next great in-state linebacker, Katy Mayde Creek's Kosi Okpala, to take on one of the most important roles in its defense.

Katy Mayde Creek 2026 OLB Kosi Okpala (6'2, 215) commtted to Texas over offers from Baylor, Houston, Miami (FL) and Penn State.

The state's No. 2-rated OLB and DCTX four-star took an official visit to Austin on June 20 and left with a clear vision of where he fits in the Longhorns’ plans.

“I like Coach (Johnny) Nansen, I like Coach Sark (Steven Sarkisian) you know,” Okpala said. “It’s a great place to go to. Academics and the football team—it’s strong. I feel like the great players there, they’re gonna make everybody better. I’m coming in there to compete and make myself better and make everybody else better too.”

Okpala's commitment bolsters a Texas class that’s loading up on defensive talent and athleticism. His skill set aligns with what the staff has prioritized under Steve Sarkisian and defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski—players who can run, hit, and stay on the field all three downs.

He's set to fill the 'Anthony Hill role' in the defense, which basically means he can and will be a jack of all trades.

“The pitch is really just: compete,” Okpala added. “Anywhere you go, there’s always gonna be a challenge. Nothing’s guaranteed in life, so really just compete. They were showing me Anthony Hill, so you know, that role—linebacker versatility—is very key there.”

Okpala collected 55 tackles and five sacks as a junior to earn first-team all-district honors.
