Team of the Week:
D-II West Texas A&M Buffaloes
Last Week: WT (3-2, 1-1) went to Ellensburg, Wash., and shocked the nation Saturday as they defeated No. 14 Central Washington (3-2, 3-0) 28-26 in the first night game ever at newly renovated Tomlinson Stadium. Duke Carter IV was incredible as he gained 259 rushing yards and a touchdown on 35 carries while adding 12 yards and a touchdown receiving. James Clark led the defense that forced two turnovers as he registered nine tackles and forced a fumble. Chris Thomas added nine tackles and a sack for the Buffaloes. WT also used a huge special teams play, as Ayrton Payne returned a blocked punt 15 yards for the final Buffaloes touchdown in the game.
The Verdict: This is a great win for a program that continues to make strides in their rebuilding process. The Buffaloes have won two games in a row for the first time this season and have a good opportunity to win their third in a row for the first time since 2016 against UTPB this week. The Buffs will need the pass defense to tighten up as conference play continues.
This Week: The Buffaloes return home from a two-game road trip as they host UT Permian Basin (1-4, 1-2) in their homecoming game Saturday at 6 p.m.
NCAA DI FCS Recap
No. 16 Sam Houston State Bearkats
Last Week: SHSU (2-2, 1-1) broke their two-game losing streak last Saturday as they defeated No. 12 Central Arkansas (2-2, 1-1) 34-31 in overtime. Ty Brock was very impressive in his first career start for the Bearkats as he completed 27-of-43 passes for 305 yards and a touchdown while adding 73 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Royce See had a great game for the defense as he recorded 11 tackles including one for a loss, one sack, and forced a fumble.
The Verdict: This win was huge for the Bearkats to keep their hopes alive for a playoff spot this season. SHSU will be favored to win each of their remaining games and needed this victory over a ranked team to help their resume. The offense may have found their spark in redshirt freshman Ty Brock from College Station.
This Week: The Bearkats travel to NRG Stadium in Houston Saturday as they face rival Stephen F. Austin (1-3, 1-2) in the Battle of the Piney Woods on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be live streamed on ESPN3.
Prairie View A&M Panthers
Last Week: PVAMU (3-3, 2-0) used a strong defensive effort including a game clinching interception by Ju’Anthony Parker in the final minute to win the State Fair Classic 22-16 over Grambling State (1-3, 1-1). Willie Green was a force on the defense as he recorded eight tackles, two and a half sacks, three and a half tackles for loss, and forced a fumble. Jalen Morton led the Panthers offense as he completed 23-of-34 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns while adding 62 yards rushing on 13 carries.
The Verdict: The Panthers have outscored their opponents 76-46 in the first quarter this season. The PVAMU offense has garnered all the attention this season, but their defense was impressive Saturday. The Panthers control their fate as they try to earn their first appearance in the SWAC championship game since 2009.
This Week: PVAMU have a bye this week before their home opener on Oct. 13, as they have completed their season opening six-game road trip.
Incarnate Word Cardinals
Last Week: UIW (2-2, 2-0) scored 24 unanswered points on their way to a 44-34 victory over conference foe Abilene Christian (2-3, 1-2) last Saturday. Freshman QB Jon Copeland was huge for the offense as he completed 15-of-36 passes for 258 yards with three touchdowns and added a receiving touchdown for the Cardinals. Ra’Quanne Dickens added 118 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Silas Steward led the defense with 13 tackles and a forced fumble.
The Verdict: The Cardinals have already doubled their win total over last season They have a legitimate chance to win each of their next two games if they can continue to force turnovers and take advantage of their opportunities.
This Week: UIW returns home this week as they battle Southeastern Louisiana (2-3, 2-1) Saturday at 4 p.m.
Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks
Last Week: A late comeback effort on a rainy night fell just short for SFA (1-3, 1-2) as they lost 17-10 on the road to No. 11 McNeese (4-1,3-0). The ‘Jacks defense was outstanding as they held the Cowboys to 257 total yards including 83 passing yards while forcing three fumbles on the night. Foster Sawyer led the offense as he completed 24-of-40 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown.
The Verdict: The Lumberjacks are trending upward recently as they continue to improve each week. SFA will need to lean on their defense this season to win games, and the defense will face a huge challenge this week as they enter a rivalry game this week.
This Week: The ‘Jacks travel to NRG Stadium in Houston this week as they face rival No. 16 Sam Houston State (2-2, 1-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Battle of the Piney Woods. The game will be live streamed on ESPN3.
Abilene Christian Wildcats
Last week: Three second half turnovers proved costly to Abilene Christian (2-3, 1-2) as they lost 44-34 at home to Incarnate Word (2-2, 2-0). Luke Anthony led the offense as he completed 35-of-55 passes for 345 yards and three touchdowns. Billy McCrary added 126 rushing yards and a touchdown on 18 carries as the Wildcats gained 221 rushing yards as a team.
The Verdict: Same song another verse for ACU this week. The Wildcats gained 566 total yards offensively and controlled the clock with over 38 minutes of possession, but turnovers were the difference for the second straight week. ACU will need to protect the football this week to have a chance at pulling the upset.
This Week: The Wildcats travel to Lake Charles, La. Saturday to face No. 10 McNeese (4-1, 3-0) at 6 p.m.
Lamar Cardinals
Last Week: Lamar (1-4, 0-3) held a lead in the first half before a huge second half for No. 15 Nicholls (3-2, 2-1) resulted in a 50-27 loss for the Cardinals. QB Darrel Colbert led the offensive charge for Lamar as he completed 10-of-20 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown while adding 60 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries. Chaston Brooks recorded eight tackles, forced a fumble, and recovered a fumble while Davon Jernigan had seven tackles and two interceptions for the Cardinals defense.
The Verdict: The Cardinals have a much-needed break this week as they get healthy and prepare for their final six conference games. Challenges remain in the schedule as three of their remaining opponents are currently ranked in the FCS poll.
This Week: Lamar has a bye this week before returning to conference action on Oct. 13.
Houston Baptist Huskies
Last Week: Houston Baptist (1-3, 0-2) was unable to overcome a big first half by SMU (2-3, 1-0) as it lost 63-27 last Saturday. LaDarius Dickens had a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as he totaled 186 returning yards. Bailey Zappe played well for the offense as he totaled 226 passing yards and two touchdowns as he completed 27-of-49 passes. Raphael Lewis led the defense with nine tackles.
The Verdict: HBU was overwhelmed from the start against an FBS opponent. There were positives in the second half for the Huskies to build on as they prepare for their remaining conference games.
This Week: The Huskies continue a three-game road trip as they travel to Conway, Ark. for a game against No. 18 Central Arkansas (2-2, 1-1) at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Texas Southern Tigers
Last Week: Texas Southern (1-3) had a bye last week.
The Verdict: The Tigers used their bye week to prepare for their upcoming conference schedule. TSU has four of their remaining seven games at home while only traveling outside of Texas once in their remaining games.
This Week: The Tigers will welcome conference foe Alabama A&M (2-3, 1-1) to BBVA Compass Stadium Saturday for a 6 p.m. start.
NCAA DII Recap
No. 4 Midwestern State Mustangs
Last Week: MSU Texas (5-0, 3-0) gained 406 total yards on offense while only having the ball for 20 minutes as they won 31-23 at Eastern New Mexico (1-4, 1-2). Layton Rabb had another 300-yard passing game as he finished 16-of-28 for 310 yards and two touchdowns. Juwan Johnson led the receiving corps with 166 yards and a touchdown on eight receptions while Xavier Land added 108 receiving yards on four catches.
The Verdict: The Mustangs will face another huge test against the defending national champion this week. MSU Texas will need the defense to stop the running game of the Lions this week to win the top 10 battle.
This Week: MSU Texas returns home this week as they face conference rival No. 9 Texas A&M-Commerce (4-1, 2-0) Saturday at 7 p.m.
No. 21 Tarleton State Texans
Last Week: Tarleton State (4-0, 3-0) used a balanced offense and opportunistic defense to gain a 54-33 road victory over Angelo State (2-3, 1-2). Ben Holmes was 17-of-28 passing for 305 yards and three touchdowns for the offense. Daniel McCants led the rushing attack with 177 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Zimari Manning added five receptions for 126 yards and two touchdowns for the Texans.
The Verdict: TSU will need their run defense to step up this week as they face a challenging triple option attack. The next four weeks will decide the conference and playoff fate for the Texans as their toughest remaining games are on the road.
This Week: The Texans return home this week to face conference foe Eastern New Mexico (1-4, 1-2) Saturday at 7 p.m.
No. 9 Texas A&M-Commerce Lions
Last Week: The Lions (4-1) rebounded from a rare loss last week as they dominated Lock Haven (1-4, 1-0) 68-6 last Saturday. Kane Wilson was the star for the offense as he completed 20-of-31 passes for 373 yards and four touchdowns while adding a rushing touchdown for TAMUC. Marquis Wimberly was Wilson’s favorite receiver as he totaled 195 yards and two touchdowns on nine catches. Ryan Stokes added 107 receiving yards and three touchdowns for the offense.
The Verdict: The TAMUC offense finally found their groove this week as they gained their most yards and totaled their most points of the season. The Lions will need the offense to continue their attack this week in a huge conference game with playoff implications. The Lions defense will also face their toughest challenge of the season to date.
This Week: The Lions travel to Wichita Falls, Texas Saturday for a 7 p.m. game against conference rival No. 4 Midwestern State (5-0, 3-0).
Angelo State Rams
Last Week: Five turnovers were costly for ASU (2-3, 1-2) as they lost 54-33 to visiting Tarleton State (4-0, 3-0) last Saturday. The Rams totaled 537 yards of offense with Payne Sullins leading the way as he completed 26-of-50 passes for 563 yards and two touchdowns. Lawson Ayo was the leading receiver with 134 yards and a touchdown on seven receptions while Keke Chism added 127 receiving yards on 12 catches and a touchdown.
The Verdict: The Rams have faced two of the best teams in the conference the last two weeks. ASU will need to regroup as they have an opportunity to win their next three games. The Rams will need the defense to improve after being torched the last two weeks.
This Week: ASU faces a long road trip this week to Silver City, N.M. as they face conference foe Western New Mexico (0-4, 0-2) Saturday at 3 p.m.
Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas
Last Week: The Javelinas (2-3, 0-3) scored a touchdown with 4:23 left in the game to end their two-game losing streak with a 33-30 victory over visiting New Mexico Highlands (2-3, 2-2). Koy Detmer Jr. led the offense with 296 passing yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-30 completions. Jeff Carr was the leading rusher gaining 101 yards and a touchdown on the night. Cameron Forziati was a difference maker on defense as he totaled 11 tackles with one and a half sacks.
The Verdict: TAMUK has been very good facing non-conference opponents this season and they will welcome another non-conference game this week. The Javelinas will need to play more disciplined as the season continues as they work to clean up the 15 penalties they committed last week.
This Week: TAMUK will continue their four-game homestand this week as they host Western Oregon (2-3, 2-2) Saturday at 7 p.m.
UT Permian Basin Falcons
Last Week: UTPB (1-4, 1-2) rallied for 14 points including a game winning touchdown with 15 seconds remaining as they earned their first win this season 21-20 over visiting Western New Mexico (0-4, 0-2). Chris Hoad recorded 15 tackles with two and a half tackles for loss to lead a defense that only allowed 233 total yards. Taylor Null led the offense completing 23-of-47 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns.
The Verdict: The Falcons earned their first win of the season behind a defense that has been impressive the entire season. That defense will allow them to stay in their remaining games as they have a chance to earn a couple more wins this year.
This Week: UTPB will travel to Canyon, Texas this week to face conference rival West Texas A&M (3-2, 1-1) Saturday at 6 p.m.
NCAA DIII Recap
No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders
Last Week: UMHB (4-0, 3-0) scored 47 points in the first half on their way to a dominating 77-7 victory at home over Southwestern (2-3, 1-3). The Cru defense held a good Pirates ground game to only 166 rushing yards led by Santos Villarreal who registered seven tackles, one tackle for loss, forced a fumble, and recovered a fumble. T.J. Josey led a balanced offensive effort with 74 receiving yards and a touchdown on just two receptions.
The Verdict: The Cru handled their business in an impressive fashion last week as they now prepare for the toughest game on their schedule. A win this week will allow the Cru to control their own destiny in the conference race and place them as the favorite for the conference’s automatic playoff bid.
This Week: The Cru conclude their two-game homestand Saturday with a top 10 clash as they host No. 7 Hardin-Simmons (4-0, 3-0) Saturday at 6 p.m.
No. 7 Hardin-Simmons Cowboys
Last Week: The Cowboys (4-0, 3-0) passed their biggest test of the season to date with flying colors as they dominated East Texas Baptist (2-2, 2-1) 59-17 last Saturday. Bryson Hammonds gained 113 rushing yards and two touchdowns while Zai Zai Smith added 103 yards and three touchdowns on the ground for an HSU offense that gained 570 total yards. Chris Miller recorded 13 tackles to lead a defense that suffocated a potent Tigers passing attack as they only allowed 197 passing yards and intercepted three passes on the night.
The Verdict: HSU certainly avoided a possible trap game last week and this week they earn a chance to upset No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor. The most impressive part of this game is the Cowboys defense was outstanding against ETBU. They will need all three phases to click this week against the Cru. A win this week would put HSU in the driver’s seat for the conference’s automatic playoff bid.
This Week: The Cowboys travel to Belton, Texas Saturday at 6 p.m. as they face No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor (4-0, 3-0) in a battle for conference supremacy.
Texas Lutheran Bulldogs
Last Week: The Bulldogs (3-1, 2-1) scored 28 points in the first quarter on their way to a 65-7 win over McMurry (1-4, 1-3). Chris Monroe gained 181 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 14 carries as he led an offense that gained 463 total rushing yards. Kyle Grona completed 13-of-20 passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns and added 35 yards rushing on seven carries for TLU.
The Verdict: TLU continues to be impressive this year. After a game against a rising Louisiana College, they then face two tough challenges that will determine their ability to gain an at-large bid to the playoffs.
This Week: The Bulldogs travel to Pineville, La. this week to play conference foe Louisiana College (2-2, 2-1) Saturday at 6 p.m.
East Texas Baptist Tigers
Last Week: ETBU (2-2, 2-1) were unable to gain any offensive traction on the road last Saturday as they lost to No. 8 Hardin-Simmons (4-0, 3-0) 59-17 in Abilene, Texas. Brian Baca led the Tigers offense as he completed 16-of-29 passes for 176 yards while adding 18 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Tarek Beaugard was the leading receiver as he caught three passes for 71 yards on the night.
The Verdict: The Tigers will look to rebound this week as they host Howard Payne. ETBU will try to regain their explosiveness offensively and they will also need the defense to be more effective stopping the run this week.
This Week: ETBU return home from their two-game road trip as they host Howard Payne (1-3, 1-2) Saturday at 6 p.m.
Trinity University (Tex.) Tigers
Last Week: Trinity (2-2, 1-1) scored 14 points off three turnovers last Saturday as they defeated Birmingham Southern (2-2, 0-2) 24-17 at Alamo Stadium. Wyatt Messex completed 13-of-22 passes for 225 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Tigers offense. Evan McDowell has 82 yards rushing and a touchdown while Charles Davis added 81 yards rushing on just 10 carries for Trinity.
The Verdict: The Tigers needed this victory to build confidence as they head into a tough two-game road trip. The defense only allowed 301 total yards last week. Trinity will need the defense to be solid over the next two weeks against teams that do not allow many points.
This Week: Trinity will begin a two-game road trip Saturday as they travel to Memphis, Tenn. to face Rhodes (4-1, 2-1) at 1 p.m.
Southwestern University Pirates
Last Week: The Pirates (2-3, 1-3) had a tough week as they lost 77-7 to No. 2 Mary Hardin-Baylor (4-0, 3-0) last Saturday. The Pirates defense was able to hold the Crusaders to under 400 total yards for the first time this season. Frederick Hover led the offensive charge with 71 yards passing on 12 attempts and 68 rushing yards and a touchdown on 25 carries for SU.
The Verdict: SU has now lost three in a row and will need to right the ship this week on the road. The Pirates next two games are winnable, but they will need to get their offense moving in the right direction.
This Week: Southwestern concludes a two-game road trip as they travel to play Sul Ross State (0-4, 0-3) Saturday at 6 p.m.
Howard Payne Yellow Jackets
Last Week: A blocked extra point and a touchdown with 20 seconds left in the game provided heartbreak for HPU (1-3, 1-2) as they lost 20-19 at home to Belhaven (1-3, 1-2). DunTayviun Gross led the offense with 78 yards receiving and two touchdowns on seven receptions. Isaiah Smith returned a punt 40 yards for a touchdown for the Yellow Jackets. Austin Killgore recorded 13 tackles, one sack, and forced a fumble to lead the defense.
The Verdict: This game was heartbreaking for a Howard Payne team that seems to have difficulty catching any breaks this season. The next two games on the schedule does not provide any relief for the Yellow Jackets.
This Week: HPU will return to the road this week as they travel to Marshall, Texas to face conference foe East Texas Baptist (2-2, 2-1) Saturday for a 6 p.m. start.
McMurry War Hawks
Last Week: McMurry (1-4, 1-3) had difficulty stopping the potent Texas Lutheran rushing attack as they lost 65-7 last Saturday at Texas Lutheran (3-1, 2-1). The War Hawks were led by Kevin Hurley Jr. who completed 17-of-40 passes for 245 yards and a touchdown. Eriel Dorsey was impressive as he gained 159 receiving yards and a touchdown on six receptions.
The Verdict: The War Hawks passing attack was good again this week, but they will need to add a rushing attack this week as they face a winnable game against Belhaven. McMurry will also need to contain the opposition’s running game better this week.
This Week: McMurry concludes their two-game road trip as they travel to Jackson, Miss. to face Belhaven (1-3, 1-2) Saturday at noon.
Austin College Kangaroos
Last Week: Austin College (1-4, 1-2) was blitzed early and often by No. 17 Berry (5-0, 3-0) last Saturday as they lost 61-0 in Rome, Ga. The ‘Roos offense was unable to gain any traction as they only totaled 127 yards of offense. Jackson Townsend led the defense with 10 tackles on the day and T.J. Melontree registered nine tackles and forced a fumble for the defense.
The Verdict: Austin College will continue a brutal stretch of games this week as they host a Centre team that has only allowed 68 points on the season. The ‘Roos offense will need to be effective this week to have a chance at the upset.
This Week: The ‘Roos return home to Jerry Apple Stadium this week as they host Centre (3-1, 1-1) Saturday at 1 p.m.
Sul Ross State Lobos
Last Week: Sul Ross (0-4, 0-3) allowed 46 unanswered points Saturday as they fell 49-16 to Louisiana College (2-2, 2-1). The Lobos offense struggled to gain any traction as they only totaled 207 yards in the game. Jacques Wisner recorded nine tackles including two tackles for a loss for a defense that limited the Wildcats to only 67 rushing yards.
The Verdict: The Lobos are struggling offensively right now, and the schedule does not provide any relief over the next two weeks. The positive for Sul Ross is that the defense has showed improvement as the season has progressed. They will need to contain the rushing attack this week.
This Week: Sul Ross concludes a two-game homestand as they host Southwestern University (2-3, 1-3) Saturday at 6 p.m.
NAIA Recap
Southwestern Assemblies of God Lions
Last Week: SAGU (2-2, 1-1) scored 28 points off four Ottawa University (2-3, 1-3) turnovers on their way to a 56-34 conference victory. CJ Collins led an offense that gained 580 total yards as he completed 34-of-49 passes for 490 yards and five touchdowns. Samuel Northey had a great game for the Lions as he caught 13 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns. Jeremy Carr added 137 yards receiving and a touchdown on 12 receptions for SAGU.
The Verdict: SAGU bounced back nicely from last week’s loss. The Lions have three of their last five games at home as they look to make a run to finish the season. Their toughest remaining game should be Nov. 3, at No. 19 Arizona Christian.
This Week: The Lions will conclude a two-game homestand Saturday as they host Texas College (0-2, 0-2) Saturday at 6 p.m.
Wayland Baptist Pioneers
Last Week: Wayland Baptist (1-3, 0-3) held a three-point lead at halftime but were unable to score in the second half as they fell 31-20 on the road to Langston (Okla.) (3-1, 3-0). David Garza led the Pioneer defense with two interceptions and returned one interception for a touchdown. Darrian Williams added eight tackles and an interception for the defense. Nick Quintero was 17-of-43 passing for 161 yards and a touchdown for the WBU offense.
The Verdict: The Pioneers have played a brutal schedule so far this season. This week’s opponent does not provide much of a break for WBU. The Pioneers will need to find more consistency on offense as they prepare for this week.
This Week: WBU will return home this week as they host Lyon College (Ark.) (2-3, 1-2) Saturday at 2 p.m. in Plainview, Texas.
Texas Wesleyan Rams
Last Week: The Rams (1-3, 1-1) had a bye this week.
The Verdict: Texas Wesleyan has had a week to prepare to face a team that is arguably the best team in the conference. The Rams will need to win all three phases of the game Saturday to have an opportunity to pull an upset.
This Week: Texas Wesleyan will host No. 13 Langston University (Okla.) (3-1, 3-0) Saturday at 7 p.m. at Farrington Field.
Texas College Steers
Last Week: A 28-point second quarter proved to be the difference last Saturday as Texas College (0-2, 0-2) fell 31-27 to No. 19 Arizona Christian. Vontyne Williams led the offense with 147 yards passing on 15-of-28 completions and a touchdown while adding 67 yards rushing on nine carries. Chris Henry had four receptions for 92 yards and a touchdown for the Steers. O’Shea White had eight tackles to lead the defense.
The Verdict: The Steers put a real scare into a good ACU team. The Steers played much better in their second game than they did in their opener. If the defense can continue to improve, the Steers could be a dangerous team as the season progresses.
This Week: Texas College will begin a two-game road trip Saturday as they travel to face Southwestern Assemblies of God University (2-2, 1-1) for a 6 p.m. start.
NJCAA Recap
No. 11 Blinn Buccaneers
Last Week: Blinn (4-1, 2-1) had a bye this week.
The Verdict: This week’s game is huge for the Buccaneers. This game could decide the conference champion. The conference champion also earns an automatic bowl game bid to the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl on Dec. 1, in Waco, Texas.
This Week: Blinn will host No. 10 Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (4-1, 2-1) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Tyler Apaches
Last Week: Tyler (4-2, 3-1) was impressive on both sides of the ball Saturday as they defeated New Mexico Military Institute (2-3, 0-3) 38-14. K’Vonte Jackson gained 166 yards rushing and a touchdown on 13 carries to lead an offense that gained 508 total yards. Chanler Ferguson recorded seven tackles with two tackles for a loss, forced two fumbles, and recovered a fumble to lead a defense that only allowed 185 total yards in the game.
The Verdict: The Apaches have now won four straight games as they are currently the hottest team in the SWJCFC. After this week’s bye, they will conclude their season with three tough conference games.
This Week: Tyler has a bye this week before they return to action on Oct. 13.
Trinity Valley Community College Cardinal
Last Week: TVCC (3-3 3-2) scored 52 points over the first three quarters on their way to a convincing 59-24 victory on the road over Cisco (3-2, 1-2). Colton Atkinson was unstoppable as he completed 10-of-15 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns while adding 107 rushing yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Tevan McAdams led the defense with 11 tackles including two sacks and a forced fumble to lead the Cardinal defense.
The Verdict: The Cardinal have now won two games in a row for the first time this season including an impressive win two weeks ago over Blinn. This week will provide a new challenge as they face a tough Kilgore team.
This Week: TVCC will conclude their two-game road trip this week as they travel to face conference foe Kilgore (3-3, 2-2) Saturday at 5 p.m.
Kilgore Rangers
Last Week: Kilgore (4-2, 2-2) scored 31 first half points as they rolled to a 45-0 victory over Texas A&T. Quez Allen completed 10-of-12 passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns while adding 41 rushing yards on five attempts. Scooter Adams score two touchdowns as he rushed for 58 yards on eight carries. The Rangers defense was impressive as they recorded eight sacks, three forced fumbles, and an interception.
The Verdict: Nothing makes for a quarterback controversy faster than the backup completing 83% of his passes and three touchdowns while showing dual threat capabilities. It will be interesting to see who Kilgore starts this week as Dakota Michaels led the team to the upset win over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M just two weeks ago.
This Week: Kilgore returns home to face conference foe Trinity Valley Community College (3-3, 3-2) Saturday at 5 p.m.
Navarro Bulldogs
Last Week: The Bulldogs (3-3, 2-3) lost a defensive battle Saturday as they fell 10-9 on the road to No. 10 Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College (4-1, 2-1). Parker McNeil was 16-of-31 passing for 161 yards for a Navarro offense that struggled to find a rhythm. Elijah Hunter recorded 10 tackles and Josh Morgan registered nine tackles and three pass breakups to lead a Bulldog defense that only allowed 328 yards.
The Verdict: Navarro’s defense was extremely impressive Saturday as they held Northeastern Oklahoma A&M to 328 total yards of offense. The Bulldogs have run the SWJCFC gauntlet the last four weeks. This week will provide a break as they prepare for their final two conference games.
This Week: Navarro will return home this week as they host Texas A&T Saturday at 3 p.m.
Cisco Wranglers
Last Week: Cisco (3-2, 1-2) could not stop the Trinity Valley Community College (3-3, 3-2) rushing attack as they lost 59-24 last Saturday. The Cisco run defense was torched for 320 rushing yards. Blake Kruemcke replaced Jordan Kitna and completed 24-of-36 passes for 230 yards. Kobe Robinson led the Wranglers receiving corps with 100 yards receiving on 11 receptions.
The Verdict: The Wranglers have now lost two straight games after opening the season with a three-game winning streak. Cisco will look to end their current losing streak this week on the road against NMMI. The Wranglers will need the defense to rebound and stop the run this week.
This Week: Cisco will return to the road this week as they travel to face New Mexico Military Institute (2-3, 0-3) Saturday at 6 p.m.
