The 15 TXHSFB Coaches Who've Been at Their Current School the Longest
The longest tenured Texas high school football coaches at current school include Albany's Denney Faith, Smithson Valley's Larry Hill and Highland Park's Randy Allen.
Larry Hill, Smithson Valley
When Hill first arrived in Smithson Valley in 1993, his intention was to parlay a couple of successful seasons into a higher-profile job. Instead, Hill turned Smithson Valley into the class of San Antonio football. The Rangers have had 30 consecutive winning seasons and are coming off back-to-back Class 5A DI State Championships.
Randy Allen, Highland Park
Allen is the longest active coach in Texas high school football, with 45 years of service. But he coached at Ballinger, Brownwood, and Abilene Cooper before taking over at Highland Park in 1999. Allen needs one more playoff win to pass the legendary Phil Danaher for the most postseason wins of all time. Technically, if you added Allen's 93-38 record, he's coached for 58 10-game regular seasons.
Scott Brooks, Canutillo
Canutillo may have that trademark blue turf, but that's about the only flashy aspect of Scott Brooks's program. The Eagles' 3-3 hybrid defense oftentimes doesn't even let the opponent get off the ground. Since 2003, Canutillo has allowed over 200 points in a season just seven times. Canutillo had one ten-win season from 1960 to 2006 and has since reached the state semifinals and two regional semifinals.
Richard Barrett, Kennedale
From 1956 to 2000, Kennedale won three district championships. Since Richard Barrett took over in 2001, the Wildcats have won 15, including every season from 2012 to 2023.
Jeff Ables, Austin Bowie
Ables has actually been at Bowie for 39 years, but he's been the head coach since 2002. The Bulldogs have blossomed into one of the most consistent teams in Austin ISD under his watch, making the playoffs in 17 of the last 19 seasons.
Scott Peach, Arlington
No last name is more synonymous with Arlington ISD than Peach. Eddy Peach started Arlington Lamar's varsity football program in 1971 and coached the Vikings through the 2009 season. His son, Scott, has also eschewed the never-ending climb of the coaching ladder in favor of becoming a staple at a school. Only Scott has done so at Arlington's flagship school, Lamar's rival. Scott has led the Colts to the playoffs 18 times in 23 seasons.
Todd Rodgers, Argyle
Argyle's historical record with Rodgers as head coach is 269-47. Their historical record without Rodgers is 1-9 during the inaugural 2002 season. The Eagles won 61 consecutive regular-season games from 2015 to 2021 and 12 straight district championships from 2009 to 2020.
David Sanchez, Laredo United
Sanchez is the greatest Laredo ISD football coach of all time. In 1997, he led Laredo Nixon to the first bi-district championship in Laredo ISD history. In 23 years at Laredo United, the Longhorns have only missed the playoffs three times.
Mark Behrens, Sachse
Sachse High School has only ever known Mark "Red" Behrens, who has roamed the sidelines with his fiery red hair and freckles since the school began varsity football in 2004. Behrens has a 141-95 career record.
Gary Joseph, Katy
Joseph has actually been at Katy for 44 years, arriving in 1982 as the defensive coordinator for program architect Mike Johnston. Since taking over as head coach in 2002, Joseph has compiled an astounding 286-31 record. Katy has won 20 district championships in 22 years and never won fewer than ten games in a season. Joseph is the second-fastest coach to ever reach 100 wins, doing so in 110 games.
John King, Longview
Longview and Coach King's I-formation are two things that go together like peanut butter and jelly. Over 22 years at the helm, the Lobos have taken on King's East Texas Tough personality. King proved how tough he really was after a battle last fall with mouth cancer. After coaching eight games from the press box, King will be back on the sidelines in 2026.
Todd Lawson, Fort Worth Dunbar
Lawson has quietly built one of the most consistent teams in Fort Worth, leading the Wildcats to the playoffs in 14 of the last 15 seasons.
Kyle Hardee, Centerville
Hardee has turned this East Texas 2A town into a consistent winner, making the playoffs every year since 2011.
Rosvel Martinez, Clint
Martinez is one of the few coaches in America still running the wishbone offense, leading the Lions to 16 playoff appearances in the last 18 years.
