Rio Grande Valley Powerhouse Looking For New Head Coach

One of the top jobs in the Rio Grande Valley opens with Edinburg Vela now looking for a head football coach.

Edinburg Consolidated ISD officially posted the boys campus coordinator and head football coach position at Edinburg Vela late Thursday.

The departure of head coach Ernie Alonzo comes after two seasons leading one of the Rio Grande Valley’s top programs. In two seasons, Alonzo posted a 19–4 record, going 11–1 in his first season in 2024 and 8–3 in 2025.

Edinburg CISD offered no other comments regarding the position outside of the job posting on the ECISD website.

It is notable that Alonzo has been the subject of two seperate lawsuits filed by three former athletes at Edinburg Vela, who claimed that Alonzo forced the players in March of 2024 to perform “strenuous physical activity while nude.” In a court hearing earlier this week, Alonzo denied those claims in sworn testimony during the first lawsuit to be subject to a hearing.

Edinburg CISD did perform an internal review of the incident in question and the case was reviewed by district attorney in Hidalgo County, but no criminal charges were filed per a report from KRGV.

Edinburg CISD expects to move forward with the search for a new head football coach at Vela quickly. The Sabercats have made the playoffs in 12 straight seasons and has had double digit wins eight times.

Vela has spent the past several realignments in Class 5A, but they are moving back to Class 6A in 2026 as they move into District 31-6A with fellow Edinburg CISD programs Edinburg, Edinburg North, Edinburg Economedes, La Joya and Weslaco.
