Fast-Growing Houston Program Looking For New Head Coach

Needville athletic director/head football coach Mike Giles has announced that he was resigning his post after 12 outstanding seasons leading the Blue Jays.

Giles, a Stephenville native, arrived in Needville in 2014 after stops in Athens and Garland Naaman Forest. He led NHS to the playoffs eight times in 12 seasons and posted a 74-60 overall record. The high-water marks for Needville came in 2019 and 2023 when the ‘Jays posted 10-3 records and advanced to the 4A-Division I regional semifinals. Needville also advanced to the area round of the playoffs three other times in Giles’ tenure (2018, 2020 and 2024).

“Needville’s been a great place for these past 12 years," Giles said. "Being in one place this long isn’t normal in this profession, but the community has been so good to us. Two of my three kids graduated from here and I got to coach my son here, so this place is always going to have special a place in my heart.

"There’s so many great memories here. I have nothing bad to say about Needville; it was just time for a change and I wanted to make sure I gave the district time to do a proper search and get a great coach here for these kids."

Needville, which posted a 5-6 record in 2025, should be an attractive job opening with a location just outside of Houston. There’s some fast-growth coming to the community and new facilities are on the horizon, including a new junior high and a covered pavilion at the high school. Expect the position to be posted early next week.
