Coats spent the last three seasons turning The Woodlands College Park into an absolute force in the Houston area. After going 4-6 in 2023, Coats led the Cavaliers to a 7-5 mark in 2024, giving CPHS just its second playoff win in school history. The 2025 season turned out even better for College Park as the Cavaliers earned their first undisputed district title, posting an 11-2 record and earning their first ever regional semifinal appearance.
The new Atascocita head coach said it was going to take a great job for him to leave College Park, but that’s exactly what he feels the opening at Atascocita is.
“Atascocita plays in the best district in the state of Texas," he said. "I’m a competitive person and I want to compete against the best. There’s big shoes to fill here as Coach Stump built this thing into a powerhouse. I truly believe we have the talent to compete and win state titles in football, just like Atascocita currently does in just about every sport. I think I bring what the administration and community was looking for are things I feel I bring to the table. I feel like my style bringing some juice and being high-energy was a fit during the interview process and I think it will be a fit for the kids.”
Prior to coming to College Park, Coats spent one season as the co-defensive coordinator at DeSoto where he was part of the Eagles Class 6A-Division II state championship team in 2022.
Coats, a Georgetown native who played collegiately at Trinity University, spent the early parts of his coaching career in the college game at Hardin-Simmons and Trinity and then he spent three seasons as an analyst at the University of Texas. In 2020, Coats jumped in the high school game where he became defensive coordinator at Round Rock Westwood.
The new Atascocita coach says he’s grateful to Conroe ISD and the College Park community for giving him his shot.
“I am forever grateful for Conroe ISD and the community here at College Park," he said. "When we came here I was a young coach and my young family grew while we were here. There’s some special memories and special people here and I’m so grateful to the kids and coaches and I think this group that’s coming back has a chance to do some great things next year."
Coats says he plans on starting at Atascocita next Monday and he wants to hit the ground running.
“I want to get in and meet the kids first, get to know them and what they are about and they can learn more about me," he said. "Obviously I want to evaluate the staff that’s currently there and meet the coaches of the other sports and the teachers.”
As for the first message to his new team and what that will be, Coats says he has an idea.
“We are going to attack every day, because we are behind," he said. "We will attack the weight room, we will attack spring ball, we will attack 7-on-7 with a swarm mentality and a sense of urgency. I want to establish who the leaders are and ensure they are bought in and they can set the tempo, because the great teams are all player led first and foremost.”
