The first high-profile job in the Houston area is open after Craig Stump announced his retirement from Humble Atascocita.
Who are some candidates we'd call if we were the Humble ISD Athletic Director?
Candidates listed in alphabetical order
Will Blaylock, HC Cypress Ranch: Blaylock, in his second season at nearby Cy Ranch, led the Mustangs to a 16-6A title and a trip to the regional semifinals in 2025. He holds a record of 35-15 in four seasons as a head coach, two at Lubbock Estacado and two at Cy Ranch. Blaylock’s also served as an assistant coach at multiple stops in the Houston area, including Crosby, Tomball and Fort Bend Hightower. So he has plenty of local ties.
Kyle Coats, HC The Woodlands College Park: Coats has quickly turned College Park into a formidable program in the Houston area. The Cavaliers went 4-6 in Coats’ first season in 2023, but improved to 7-5 and an area playoff appearance in 2024 and posted an 11-2 mark last year, including a 13-6A title. Coats has experience at the college level and was the defensive coordinator on DeSoto’s 2022 6A-Division II state championship squad.
Jacody Coleman, HC Mansfield Timberview: Coleman has plenty of ties to Stump and the Atascocita program as a whole. Coleman played for Stump when he was head coach at Beaumont West Brook and then spent 11 seasons on staff under Stump at Atascocita. Coleman was eventually elevated to defensive coordinator before getting his shot to be a head coach in 2022 at Dallas Skyline. He turned Skyline into a competitive program in his three years at the helm and posted a 7-4 mark in his first season leading Mansfield Timberview in 2025.
Justen Evans, HC Corpus Christi Miller: Evans has built a perennial contender on the northside of Corpus Christi, posting an 84-36 record in 10 seasons leading Miller to regional final appearances in 2020, 2023 and 2024. Miller has made the playoffs in seven consecutive seasons, impressive considering from 1991-2018 the Bucs had made the playoffs just three times. Could that success translate in the Houston area?
Jeff Riordan, HC Tyler Chapel Hill: Riordan has built Tyler Chapel Hill into a power since arriving on the scene in 2019. The Bulldogs under his watch have advanced to a state title game in 2023, two state semifinal appearances in 2021 and 2022, a regional final in 2024 and a regional semifinal in 2020. Riordan’s career track record is solid with a record 129-49 in 14 seasons as a head coach. He’s got ties to the area as from 2012-2018 he led Crosby and took the Cougars to a state semifinal appearance in 2014. Would Riordan leave a powerhouse he’s built in East Texas to return to the Greater Houston area considering the recent facility upgrades at Chapel Hill?
Josh Stump, OC Humble Atascocita: Considering Atascocita’s track record of success, you’ve got to think Humble ISD strongly considers rewarding that success with an internal hire. If there is an internal hire to be made there’s not a better candidate than Josh Stump, who has been his father's offensive coordinator the past few seasons and has been named interim head coach at AHS.
