Stepp's No. 8 Game of 2025: Win-Or-Go-Home Chaos in 3-5A DII

Matt Stepp's No. 8 game of the 2025 Texas high school football season was between the Arlington Seguin Cougars and the Mansfield Summit Jaguars.

Seguin’s offense would continue to struggle with two turnovers on their next two drives, but the Cougars defense would keep them in it with a pair of key fourth down stops, including one inside the five-yard line, to keep the game at 8-0 deep into the second quarter.

The Cougars would finally get their offense going with 5:30 left in the second when QB Chevy Andrews connected with speedy WR G’Manii Smith for a 21-yard touchdown pass. Andrews found Cam Henderson for the two-point conversion to tie the game.

Seguin’s defense would continue their lights-out play forcing a Summit punt on the final drive of the second quarter and the opening drive of the third quarter. The Cougars got their offense back in gear on their first drive of the half when ATH Johnaven Polk scored on a 10-yard run; a two-point PAT run from Andrews staked Arlington Seguin to a 16-8 lead with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter.

After forcing another Summit punt, Seguin seized apparent control of the game as Polk got his second touchdown run of the night, this one from four yards out, and the PAT kick would give the Cougs a 23-8 lead with 3:25 left in the third.

Summit would finally get an answer as QB Ian Gebhardt found his footing and even hit a couple of key passes to get the Jaguars untracked. Gebhardt would cap the drive with a 16-yard touchdown run on the final play of the third quarter to cut the Seguin lead to 23-14 after the failed two-point try.

This time it was Summit’s defense that would get the job done by forcing a Seguin punt that was also short (both teams REALLY struggled in the kicking game). With the Jaguars now having a chance to take advantage of the short field, RB Adarion Nettles would cap a short drive with a two-yard touchdown run and Gebhardt’s two-point run would cut the Seguin lead to 23-22 with 6:45 left in the game.

Summit’s defense would need to get a stop on the ensuing drive to get a chance to win the game, but Seguin converted two fourth downs, including a fake punt pass of 32 yards from Polk to Smith, to burn most of the clock before the Cougars turned the ball over on downs to Summit with just a minute left at the Jaguars 17.

Mansfield Summit would get to the Seguin 36-yard line with no timeouts left in a last ditch attempt to win the game, but the Jags would turn the ball over on downs as time expired and Seguin would escape Mansfield with a thrilling one-point victory.

It was a cruel end of the season for Mansfield Summit, which saw a close Week 11 loss to Arlington Seguin keep the Jags out of the playoffs for the second straight season.
