After a stellar 23-year head coaching career, Craig Stump, the longtime head coach at Humble Atascocita, has announced his retirement from coaching, and Humble ISD has officially posted the vacancy for head football coach.
Stump has been at the helm at Atascocita since 2012 and, over 14 seasons, turned the Eagles into a state powerhouse that routinely produced college and NFL-level talent. After going 5–5 in his first season, Atascocita rattled off at least 10 wins in 10 of the next 12 seasons, with the high-water mark coming in 2016 when the Eagles advanced to the Class 6A Division I state semifinals.
"A lot of pride in football and the overall athletic program," Stump said. "When we got here we struggled in every sport. In 14 years we’ve done a lot and been successful in a variety sports. We’ve won more than anyone in Humble ISD history. The coaches, the administration are just as responsible for the wins as I ever was.
The Eagles made six additional trips to the regional finals during Stump’s tenure in 2015, 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. Stump finishes his career with a 206–61 overall record, including two seasons at TAPPS school Beaumont Kelly and seven seasons as head coach at Beaumont West Brook High School from 2005–11, where he led the Bruins to the third round of the playoffs in 2006 and 2009.
"The consistency is something we are really proud of," Stump said. "We’ve had coaches come and go, but we move guys up and they step in and do a great job. We’ve had a lot of kids go on to be successful in football, but more importantly in life and that’s what it’s all about. We teach lessons through football for these guys to be successful when they get out in the world."
Stump’s retirement opens one of the Houston area’s most attractive head coaching jobs, as Atascocita’s sustained success and access to elite talent will make the position highly sought after. Despite being a multi-high school district, Humble ISD has seen consistent football success across its programs in recent years.
The opening also comes during a transition in athletic administration for Humble ISD, which is currently led by an interim athletic director. A permanent athletic director is expected to be named later this spring.
