Last year’s surprise regional champion La Vernia enters the year in the new position of regional favorite with a dozen starters returning, but the Bears did lose 30 lettermen, so if the depth can be rebuilt they should be in the mix. Bay City was a regional favorite a year ago and advanced to the fourth round before falling to La Vernia, the Black Cats defense is experience, but they’ll be young at the skill spots. Can El Campo take a step forward after two good but not great seasons? While Port Lavaca Calhoun will have a new look on offense after the Sandcrabs were a surprise third-round playoff appearance.
Calallen in year two under Charlie Reeve looks to move back into contention in Region IV after a strong regional semifinal appearance in year one. The Wildcats have seven back on defense and you’d think a second season in the system will be a big boost for the ‘Cats. Tuloso-Midway will look to finally take Calallen down as the Warriors have seven back on both sides, can they end their nearly fifty-year losing streak to Calallen? Zapata with eighteen starters back from a 7-4 team should be much-improved as well.
