Barbers Hill has found their next head football coach as Dave Campbell's Texas Football has confirmed the hiring of Cypress Woods head coach Cody Simper to lead the Eagles football program. Simper steps in for Carl Abseck according to sources agreed to a “mutual parting of ways” with Barbers Hill in early January.
In four seasons leading the Wildcats, Coach Simper’s teams have posted a 26-17 record, including an 8-3 mark in 2024.
Coach Simper statewide is probably best known for his stint at Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial from 2015-2020. He helped start the program from the ground up and ran up an impressive 50-14 record in six years and led the Eagles to the Class 5A-Division I state semifinals in 2020. Ironically in that 2020 state semifinal game Vets fell to Cedar Park, coached by his predecessor at BHHS, Carl Abseck.
Prior to that stint at Veterans Memorial, Simper was head coach at Corpus Christi Ray from 2010-2014 where he posted a 30-24 overall record in five years.
A native of Gonzales, Simper began his coaching career at Corpus Christi Ray where he coached running backs from 2004-2007. Simper joined Cy-Fair ISD in 2008 where he served as offensive coordinator at Cypress Springs. At the age of 28, he was hired for his first head coaching job at Ray in 2010.
The new Barbers Hill head coach is known as an efficient and organized coach who brings plenty of energy and enthusiasm to the table; his teams are known for playing a wide-open and fun style of football who encourages his athletes to play multiple sports.
Expectations will be high in Barbers Hill, the last three coaches for the Eagles all have state titles on their resume and despite an 8-4 mark in 2024, the district decided to move on from Abseck despite a solid record.
