Southlake Carroll (8-0, 5-0) at Trophy Club Nelson (8-0, 5-0): It’s the game of the year in 4-6A for the second straight year as unbeaten Byron Nelson looks to take down state powerhouse Southlake Carroll and earn a signature win that has eluded Travis Pride’s squad the past two years.
This time Byron Nelson gets the opportunity to do it at home after falling to the Dragons 38-23 on the road a year ago.
Both teams come off dominant wins in what really amounted to tune-ups for both squads. Carroll threw up 63 first half points in a 70-28 win over Haslet Eaton. Georgia Tech QB commit Graham Knowles threw for 307 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score, while the Dragons running game chewed up 298 yards and eight touchdowns.
Riley Wormley didn’t see much action, but he did have two short touchdown runs in his second game back after being ruled eligible by the UIL; he could be an X-Factor in this showdown as he gives that Carroll running game a different kind of big-play ability.
Byron Nelson was equally dominant in its win last week as the Bobcats blew past Keller Central, 56-10. Byron led 49-0 at halftime and cruised in the second half. The Bobcats had a pair of receivers top 100-yards on the night, while Tucker James added three rushing touchdowns. Byron Nelson scored touchdowns on three of its first four offensive plays of the night.
This one will be a little closer than last year’s 15-point Carroll win. Byron’s defense is legit, and they’ll be Carroll’s biggest test of the season. But Carroll’s offense has too much balance and the Dragons have exceled in big games, especially inside of district play.
