Schmid was the focal point of the Sam Houston offense for the better part of three seasons. He accounted for 8,305 total yards in his four seasons on campus. He threw for 7,401 yards and 62 touchdowns during that time.

To replace Schmid, Sam Houston did what is expected in modern football: Dip into the transfer portal. The Bearkats are expected to add Georgia Tech transfer Jordan Yates to the quarterback room to compete with junior Keegan Shoemaker.

Sam Houston was 22-1 in the calendar year of 2021, winning the FCS Championship in the spring and reaching the semifinals in the fall.
