Ranking the 2022 In-State Recruiting Classes

In this feature, TexasFootball.com ranks the top recruiting classes in the state from top to bottom as National Signing Day has come to an end. Who is No. 1?

1. Texas A&M

The Aggies signed what is being touted as the No. 1 class in the history of the "recruiting rankings era."

TAMU did well in and out of the state of Texas. It inked six of the top 10 highest-rated prospects in the DCTF Hot 100 as well as three out-of-state five-star defensive linemen: Shemar Stewart (6'6, 270), Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy (6'3, 280) and Walter Nolen (6'4, 325)

The state's No. 1 OLB Harold Perkins flipped his commitment to LSU on National Signing Day, but Jimbo Fisher may have an answer in Louisiana-based four-star safety Jacoby Matthews (6'2, 190)

2. Texas

Texas inked the No. 1 OT (Kelvin Banks) and the No. 1 OG (Devon Campbell). That in and of itself is very impressive, but they also signed four more highly lauded in-state offensive line prospects.

The defensive secondary is also boosted with four-star safety Bryan Allen Jr. (6'0, 185) and four-star cornerback Terrance Brooks (5'11, 190)

All-in-all UT finished with a class that rates No. 5 nationally.

3. Baylor

Baylor inked two DCTF four-star prospects in Lewsiville WR Armani Winfield (6'2, 180) and Tenaha ATH Jeremy Patton (6'2, 210) in the Early Signing Period.

The Bears secured eight players in the DCTF Hot 100. A common theme jumps out -- the BU coaching staff seems to have an eye for mining talent within the Lone Star State's borders.

It is a well-rounded class with talent at most positions, but an elite quarterback signing might have bumped this class into the Top 25 nationally. That being said, 2023 Dripping Springs QB Austin Novosad has issued an early verbal commitment.

4. Texas Tech

Wow, what a difference one year makes. Tech is up three spots from last year's rankings.

The Red Raiders closed with a flurry under the guidance of new head coach Joey McGuire and showed that the focus is on TXHSFB talents.

Most of the work was done in the Early Signing Period, but Amarillo OL Erik Gray and Stephenville ATH Coy Eakin are the newest additions to Tech's 2022 efforts.

5. Houston

A big year on the field has netted positive results on the recruiting trail for Dana Holgorsen and the Cougars, finishing in the Top 50 nationally.

Klein Cain WR Matthew Golden (6'0, 190) is the highest-rated recruit in the class, checking in at No. 32 in the DCTF Hot 100.

UH also signed the Houston Touchdown Club Defensive Player of the Year in Spring Westfield DT Anthony "AJ" Holmes (6'2, 270)

6. TCU

Garland duo WR Jordan Hudson (6'1, 180) and S Chace Biddle (6'0, 190) were the needle-movers in the 2022 class for TCU.

Keep an eye on speed-burner Major Everhart (5'11, 170) from Amarillo Tascosa and Rockwall-Heath QB Joshua Hoover (6'2, 205), both of these players have a chance to break out in a big way down the line.

7. SMU

SMU had to deal with the loss of some critical recruits who flipped to TCU with Sonny Dykes and Co.

Rhett Lashlee's staff did a great job securing several high-profile recruits down the homestretch, like three-star Southlake Carroll TE RJ Maryland (6'4, 210), three-star Dallas Skyline CB Anthony Davis (5'11, 180), and three-star Mansfield Summit S Ahmaad Moses (5'11, 195).

8. UTSA

We have to put UTSA's ranking into perspective here.

While it did finish lower within the in-state rankings (No. 6 in 2021), the national rankings say this is the Road Runners' best recruiting class EVER.

All ten in-state signings are of the three-star variety.

9. North Texas

In a class of sleepers, UNT was able to flip North Dallas three-star CB Mohammed Bility (6'2, 180) from Rice to grab the No. 9 spot away from the Owls.

10. Rice

The Owls took a bit of a step back after a solid 2021 class but still inked some intriguing TXHSFB talents like three-star North Mesquite DT Davion Carter (6'0, 280) and three-star Houston Heights DT Demone Green (6'2, 240).

11. Texas State

The Bobcats centered on the Transfer Portal, but signed two in-state prospects with Azle three-star CB Bernock Iya (6'3, 170) grabbing the spotlight.

12. UTEP

The Miners only in-state signing was West Mesquite two-star OL Trevion Mitchell (6'5, 280).
