It's safe to say for someone to be optimistic during on and off lockdowns and stay-home orders, it can take a toll on just about anyone. But that has not been the case with Cypress Bridgeland 2021 WR Dylan Goffney (6'1, 200).
For him, this has been the moment for him to build better and stronger.
"I have been taking this time well and looking at all the positives. I've used this time to get better without all of the distractions," Goffney said. "This has been a time of maturity for me, and I've developed a better work ethic. I understand the game better, and I've gotten faster also."
All the work that Goffney has been doing looks to have already reaped results. As one of the stars at a relatively new program in the Bridgeland community, the leadership from a player of his caliber can go a long way in building a culture. This is a role and responsibility that Goffney embraces.
Though the team does not officially report until September 7, he and his teammates have been at SAC (Strength and Conditioning) Camp for a good portion of the summer, reporting in the morning to work. Going into his final season, Goffney is ready to do what's needed for the team to continue trending in the right direction.
"I'm a guy who wants to lead by example, working hard every day. I look to help my teammates so we can all be on the same page and get better," Goffney said. "I think during COVID, I have been able to help the younger kids by setting a good example. That is my role on this team."
Besides the crucial mental side of what the three-star athlete Goffney brings, his play on the field is equally essential. Last season, he hauled in 60 passes for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns. His team had a solid bounce-back season since its inaugural (3-7), finishing 8-3 and narrowly losing a playoff game in the opening round.
In addition to working with his teammates this summer, Goffney has been quite busy on the recruiting trail. With over 20 offers in hand, he chose to commit to SMU on May 9 over Arizona, Cal, Arkansas, Utah and Pitt, to name a few.
"I liked a lot of the schools that offered me, but SMU felt like a second home. It's like a family, and I feel like I can be successful there," Goffney said. "I have a great relationship with all the coaches, and coach Sonny Dykes has been great."
Goffney said that he got a great vibe from the campus when visiting unofficially and catching a game last season against Texas State. He keeps constant contact with the coaches, including Dykes, He says that their talks focus more on family and safety than football.
But make no mistake, Dykes and crew know what they are getting in Goffney.
On tape, he is dominant and brings a physical presence. In the red zone, he is a tough cover for any defensive back lined across from him. His physical play and versatility are what Goffney said drew the SMU coaches to him.
Goffney was the Next Level Athlete WR MVP at the Texas Top 100 Showcase in Houston.
