College Station has proven to be the epi-center of Texas 7-on-7 play and it’s not just because it hosts the state tournament every year, but also because it has produced the last two Division I state champions. A year ago it was College Station High who took down cross-town rival A&M Consolidated in the title game and this year it was the Tigers who took home the glory with a 37-31 win over Southlake Carroll. The final day of the tournament started out with a bang as several first round games came right down to the wire. The DCTF crew witnessed a pair of absolute bangers as Manvel — on the game’s final play — scored and then got the conversion to slip past Frisco Lone Star 38-37. While on the opposite end of the field, Flower Mound Marcus also scored on the game’s final play to defeat San Antonio O’Connor. We then hurried to the field next to us to catch overtime of Rockwall’s 48-47 win over Austin Anderson.

The Round of 16 didn’t fail to produce fireworks either as Arlington Lamar and Katy dueled in a back and forth affair that at times got heated and was filled with some controversy at the end. Katy defeated Lamar 37-33, but there was confusion once the final horn sounded. Here's why: Katy scored a touchdown with about nine minutes left to take a 31-27 lead over Lamar. On the score, a Lamar player got tangled up on the Katy sideline and a brief scrum ensued resulting in the ejection of a Katy player. The field administrator had gone over to the Katy sideline to ensure everything was sorted out and that same moment a horn signaling an injury went off suddenly (and in error). That distracted the scorekeeper and the officials who were busy sorting out who was ejected and the score was never updated (although we were tweeting about it). Lamar would score to take a 33-31 lead, but Katy answered with a touchdown on the final play to make it 37-33 (although some thought it was 33-31 Lamar). After some confusion and the officials coming together in the tent to discuss what happened, the correct score was reported and Katy advanced to the quarterfinals.

The Tigers had another heart0stopping game in the quarters, slipping past DeSoto 28-26 as Katy stopped an Eagles two0-point try at the end of the game for the win. Katy’s run of close wins came to an end in the semifinals as RJ Mickens’ touchdown catch as time expired allowed Southlake Carroll to advance to the title game with a 39-33 win.

Mesquite Horn ran through the consolation bracket scoring over forty points in their final four games, including a 54-53 win over Round Rock in the consolation title game.

Powers Recruiting Notes

• Cypress Bridgeland 2020 WR Dylan Goffney (6’0, 190) is a consistent playmaker on the outside, and he has powerful hands. He was able to make some very tough catches look easy.  He runs good routes and is consistent and dependable. Already has a handful of early offers (Arizona, Arkansas, Boston College, Duke, SMU) but his list will continue to expand. I want to re-emphasize his hands. He caught everything that was thrown in his direction. 
  • Note: 2021 TE Dylan Crippen is another top prospect to watch at Bridgeland who is currently flying under the radar.
