Class Overview
SMU currently boasts the No. 1 recruiting class AAC according to Rivals.com.
Checking in at No. 43 overall nationally the Mustangs sit in 4th place among Texas-based colleges -- just one spot behind TCU and only a few spots behind Baylor.
Sonny Dykes and Co. have done a fantastic job recruiting the Dallas area; securing commitments from some of the top prospects on the top teams.
DB Jonathan McGill (Coppell) is the newest area addition to the pledge class, joining Power Five offered prospects like RB TJ McDaniel (Southlake Carroll), CB Brandon Crossley (Little Elm), WR Rashee Rice (Richland), WR Shamar Johnson (Richland), and OG CerTaidrian Brooks (Allen).
The Class Jewel
Per the Next Level Athlete rating system, the highest-rated Class of 2019 commitment is San Antonio Reagan linebacker Lucas Eatman.
San Antonio-based NLA scout Steve Gideon has watched Eatman multiple times and feels like the Mustangs are getting a true defensive difference maker.
"I evaluated Lucas Eatman versus Madison," Gideon said. "I love the way this kid gets around the field. They have talented and mobile QB Dante Heaggans. Eatman was easy to pick out because he was the only one that could tackle him in space."
"He is a tremendous high school football player at OLB. With his length, I expect that is where he will play at the next level unless he eats himself into a hand in the grass position. Has a smooth glide that getting him around football field and ball; he will stuff a gap and defeat a block with great hand use. With some added weight to the 6'3 frame, he will bring the wood on tackles in the future."
The Diamond in the Rough
Keep an eye on Houston CE King running back/athlete Ulysses Bentley IV. He is not a prospect who committed with a lot of fanfare, but he is explosive and quick.
Bentley uses a dash and dodge type of running style to avoid tacklers and is the type of athlete who can line up in the backfield or split out in the slot. Think of a Desmon White type of athlete with added size.
Bentley IV and McDaniel should compliment each other in the backfield, and the future is bright at the position for the Mustangs.
