Wimberley has absolutely dominated Region IV the past two years, winning eight playoff games inside of regional play with the CLOSEST game being 19-points, in fact the Texans average margin of victory in the Region IV playoffs is 48.75 points. The Texans will be favored once again, but with Cuero moving back to Region IV, can the Gobblers be a team to challenge Wimberley and their dominance?

District play will be much tougher for Wimberley as the UIL has given the Texans a solid group of teams to contend with, but Doug Warren’s squad is still the team to beat. Lago Vista, a regional finalist in 2022 should be a formidable foe, while Gonzales returns a strong cast from a Region III playoff team. Navarro has traditionally been solid, but the Panthers were gutted by graduation, losing twenty starters. Jarrell and Salado will be interesting as well, new Jarrell head coach Alan Haire is a Salado alum and was the Eagles head coach from 2016-2021.

There’s a clear top two teams in 14-4A Division II as Devine on the strength of sixteen returning starters gets the slight edge over Bandera who posted a surprise 10-2 mark a year ago. Where things get interesting is trying to determine which two teams get the last playoff spots, Pearsall was 5-6 a year ago, but graduation hit the Mavericks hard. Carrizo and San Antonio Memorial both struggled a year ago, but Memorial has some hope with a drop to Division I and sixteen returning starters. This district will be competitive internally, but they’ll be hard pressed to win a playoff game against District 13.

Cuero and Sinton both feel like they have the pieces in place to challenge Wimberley in 2024, but Cuero’s actually had success against the Texans in recent matchups, while Sinton has been competitive but a step behind. Give the Gobblers the edge inside of district play. Ingleside had a magical 2023 season going 11-2 but graduation hit the Mustangs hard, they’ll be in a dog fight with Rockport-Fulton who has experience, but a new head coach in 2024.

Congrats to the four teams in 16-4A Division II who are already in the playoffs, seeding will be the only thing up for grabs in this group and getting one of the top two seeds and avoiding Cuero/Sinton in bi-district will be vital. Port Isabel is the heavy favorite to win the district on the strength of their veteran offense. Three Division I drop-downs join the loop and the battle for second should be an absolute dog fight between Kingsville and La Feria, both bring plenty of talent back and last year’s game was a 14-7 slugfest. Kingsville was 1-4 in  games decided by seven points or less a year ago.
