It is the battle of the birds as the top ranked team in 4A-Division I Argyle Eagles take on the Melissa Cardinals.

Argyle is coming off its bye week after a tight win over Waco La Vega, 17-14. That game turned out much closer than many predicted. Special teams played a big part as Argyle’s Jaamael Fenton’s 85-yard punt return sealed things for the Eagles.

Argyle put up 265 yards as a team, with 143 yards on the ground. Quarterback Jacob Robinson threw for 122 yards and a touchdown. The Argyle defense also forced a fumble in the win.

Melissa defeated Paris 47-10 last week as it started district play to avenge a playoff loss last year to the Wildcats. Melissa has scheduled some really tough opponents, which is reflected in its record, but the Wildcats have been slowly rounding into form. They had a big win over Midlothian Heritage, which knocked them out of the 4A division 1 rankings.

Melissa pummeled Paris with 503 yards on 20 first downs. Quarterback Sam Fennegan aired the ball out with 337 yards and 3 touchdowns. Wide receiver Jayvon Smith was the main beneficiary as he caught five receptions for 156 yards and two touchdowns.

This is going to be a very good one. Argyle has shown they are beatable but still the top team. Melissa has shown that they have learned from their losses.

Although it is concerning that in Melissa’s win over Paris, they committed 16 penalties that cost them 125 yards. If Melissa can protect the football, they could give themselves a chance at pulling the upset.
