Welcome to TXHSFB Inside The Numbers, a weekly look at Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s comprehensive computer rankings. Each week, we’ll take a deep dive into that week’s Texas high school football computer rankings to separate the signal from the noise.

CLASS 6A and CLASS 5A

Nothing to see here. The state’s two largest classifications don’t start practice until next week, and won’t play games until September 24 at the earliest – that’s Week 5. So we’re in a holding pattern here.

CLASS 4A

At The Top… Say this about the computer: it likes style points. Lampasas’ dominant win over Wimberley was enough to vault them to the No. 1 spot in 4A DI, ahead of Argyle (who only beat Celina by two touchdowns). Port Lavaca Calhoun’s victory over El Campo pushed them to No. 5, while Springtown’s fully recovered from its Week 1 loss and back into the top 10. There’s a new No. 1 in DII as well, as Pleasant Grove jumps Carthage and West Orange-Stark for the top spot, though that’s probably due to the fact that the Bulldogs and Mustangs have only played one game combined. China Spring vaults into the top 5 by battering Brownwood, and Jasper’s dominant win over Newton gets them from 13 to 6.

Fastest One-Week Riser: DII No. 30 Liberty (beat Diboll 37-0, up 22 spots from No. 52)

Biggest One-Week Faller: DII No. 45 Seminole (lost to Denver City 50-36, down 14 spots from No. 31)

Highest-Ranked 0-3 Team: DII No. 13 Celina

Lowest-Ranked 3-0 Team: DII No. 57 Sanger

Projected Title Games Right Now…
DIVISION I: Lampasas over Argyle by 2 (last week: Argyle over Lampasas by 1)
DIVISION II: Pleasant Grove over Carthage by 1 (last week: Carthage over Pleasant Grove by 3)

CLASS 3A

At The Top… It was Division I’s turn to get turned upside-down this week, as Grandview jumps up to No. 2 after a brief dip, Malakoff is up a spot after a loss, Cameron Yoe rebounds from its loss the week prior, and Mount Vernon makes its Top 10 debut after pummeling Paul Pewitt. Division II is calmer, though Paul Pewitt’s loss and subsequent drop means Poth is the new No. 2 team. Lexington and Childress crack the top 10 at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively.

Fastest One-Week Riser: DII No. 64 Reagan County (beat Ozona 46-13, up 35 spots from No. 99)

Biggest One-Week Faller: DI No. 68 Diboll (lost to Liberty 37-0, down 27 spots from No. 41)

Highest-Ranked 0-3 Team: DI No. 26 Atlanta

Lowest-Ranked 3-0 Team: DII No. 84 Queen City

Projected Title Games Right Now…
DIVISION I: Brock over Cameron Yoe by 9
(last week: Brock over Hallettsville by 13)
DIVISION II: Canadian over Poth by 3 (last week: Canadian over Paul Pewitt by 2)

CLASS 2A

At The Top… The computer thought Shiner’s win over 4A Smithville was enough to boost them to the top of Division I, but the story is Joaquin, who rocketed into the top 10 from No. 33 after a big win over Groveton. Division II is a lot more boring — Muenster drops out of the Top 10, making room for Archer City, but everything else is pretty ho-hum.

Fastest One-Week Riser: DI No. 10 Joaquin (beat Groveton 41-0, up 23 spots from No. 33)

Biggest One-Week Faller: DI No. 63 Ozona (lost to Reagan County 46-13, down 36 spots from No. 27)

Highest-Ranked 0-3 Team: DI No. 18 Ganado

Lowest-Ranked 3-0 Team: DI No. 48 Hale Center and DII No. 48 Shamrock

Projected Title Games Right Now…
DIVISION I: Shiner over Post by 3 (last week: Refugio over Post by 6)
DIVISION II: Hamlin over Mart by 8 (last week: Hamlin over Mart by 5)

CLASS 1A

At The Top… There’s another new No. 1 this week, this in 1A Division I as Sterling City jumps Rankin after the Red Devils’ close loss to Borden County. Happy vaults four places up to No. 6, but other than that, it’s pretty boring in 1A DI. Not much more to see in 1A Division II, where Richland Springs still holds the top spot, though Strawn jumps a couple spots to No. 5.

Fastest One-Week Riser: DII No. 50 Panther Creek (beat Abilene TLC 63-0, up 21 spots from No. 71)

Biggest One-Week Faller: DII No. 58 Apple Springs (lost to Tyler Willowbend 32-7, down 25 spots from No. 33)

Highest-Ranked 0-3 Team: DII No. 39 Lueders-Avoca

Lowest-Ranked 3-0 Team: DI No. 52 Vernon Northside

Projected Title Games Right Now…
DIVISION I: Sterling City over Union Hill by 5
(last week: Rankin over Jonesboro by 8)
DIVISION II: Richland Springs over Balmorhea by 1 (last week: Richland Springs over Balmorhea by 2)
