Prosper offensive coordinator Malcolm Hill was named the new head football coach at Pflugerville Weiss on Monday, Pflugerville ISD announced.
Hill replaces Vernon Hughes, who departed after two seasons and a 17-5 record to take over as head coach at Mesquite Horn.
“The opportunity to serve a community and good kids was intriguing," Hill said. "I feel like I am a good fit for this job and it’s not often for a head coaching job you can come into a program that’s been winning. It’s ironic, I’ve been in a situation just like these kids. When you are waiting to see who your coach is going to be and it is tough. I get it that the kids are a little restless and wondering what direction they’ll go. I understand where they are coming from. I’m glad it’s me that gets to lead and invest in these kids and I’m so fired up."
Hill, a native of Frisco, played his high school ball at Frisco Liberty and then moved on to the college game where he played cornerback at Rice.
After his playing career wrapped up, Hill began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Central Missouri before becoming a quality control analyst at Sam Houston State University.
The new Weiss head coach began his high school coaching career in his native Frisco at Reedy High School where he was an offensive assistant. He then moved to Coppell where he coached under his old high school coach Joe McBride before returning to Reedy.
He joined the staff at Prosper as the new offensive coordinator in 2023 under first year head coach Tyler Moore.
“Coach Moore is a true professional and I wouldn’t be in this situation without his support," he said. "As a first-year head coach he took a chance on me to be his offensive coordinator, and I’m forever grateful. I also have to give a lot of credit to the kids I coached because you don’t get to good places without great kids."
Hill says the timing isn’t perfect getting hired in late May, but he’s excited to get boots on the ground in Pflugerville and get in front of his kids.
“When I get to Weiss, priority No. 1 is the kids," he said. "The kids have to feel my energy and I have to feel their energy. The dates are set we know we are starting the season end of Augus. We don’t have to rush, but the quicker the kids trust me and the staff the better. We were a good team last year and we will be a good team this year. I’m more worried about being a good team in December than being a good team in August."
Weiss posted an 8-3 mark in 2024, with their three losses coming by a combined 19 points, including a six-point loss to Angleton in the bi-district playoffs.
