In news that was first reported by HubCityPreps’ Randy Rosetta on Tuesday afternoon, Lubbock ISD made things official promoting offensive coordinator Jason Sims to the position of head football coach at Lubbock Monterey.
Sims, who came to Monterey before the 2024 season after spending the two seasons as the offensive coordinator in East Texas at Mount Pleasant. He was part of a staff that helped the Plainsmen to a 7-5 record, a district title and bi-district playoff win in 2024.
The new Monterey head coach has plenty of experience as a head coach as he holds an impressive 100-47 overall record. From 2010-2014 he led Quanah to three regional semifinal appearances in five seasons, before coming to his alma mater in 2015 to lead the program at Childress.
From 2015-2021 he led Childress to 61 total wins and a pair of regional final appearances in 2017 and 2020, in 2017 CHS posted a 12-2 record with the only two losses coming to powerhouse Canadian. After an unbeaten regular season in 2021 and an upset first-round playoff loss, Sims was not retained in a controversial move around the community of Childress at the time.
Sims, guided Monterey through spring workouts after former Plainsmen head coach Judd Thrash was placed on administrative leave in early April after an arrest. The MHS job was posted by Lubbock ISD on May 9 and shortly thereafter it was learned that Thrash was reassigned to a different role by LISD.
Coach Sims inherits a Monterey program that should again be a contender in 2-5A Division I in 2025 after the district title a year ago, he’s known for an innovative offense and is well-liked and well-respected in the community and by his peers.
